October 24, 1952 THE TWIG Page five Annual Corn Huskin* Bee Set for Halloween MUSIC DEPARTMENT NEEDS YOU Not long ago the Music Build ing with its spacious classrooms, modern lighting, and assortment of instruments, belonged to a privileged few. Except for music majors, nobody ventured inside the world of theory and har mony, unless to use it as a short cut to class or chapel. Because of the dissatisfaction of Miss Phyllis Weyer, instructor of instrumental music, the pic ture is changing rapidly. “Why,” reasoned Miss Weyer, “doesn’t Meredith have an orchestra? In a college with as strong a music department as exists here, it is a shame that instrumental tal ent is being overshadowed by voice, piano, and organ.” Tired of seeing this phase of music neglected while other organiza tions progressed. Miss Weyer de cided to make some changes. She worked quietly and res olutely, and soon violins, flutes and an oboe were accompanying the chorus and the piano in chapel. A few of the young mu sicians are accomplished music students. Most of them are be ginners who were anxious to receive instructions and experi ence. All have caught Miss Wey- er’s enthusiasm to have a new music organization contributing to the cultural life at Meredith and adding to the established reputation of the music depart ment. The purpose that keeps them plugging away at their instru ments is the belief that great things all have small beginnings. What today is a handful of stu dents meeting weekly to prac tice hymns for chapel might someday be a full college orches tra rehearsing for seasonal con certs. It is their hope that others at Meredith-swho had rudimen tary training in childhood or who had no musical training—would like to master an instrument and blend their small, important part into the beautiful harmony of a symphony. . If any student is interested in joining the group, contact Miss Weyer, 111 Music Building. The instrument of your choice and free instructions are there for you. - HOG-CALLING, CORN SHUCKING, SQUARE DANCING FEATURED All dressed in their best corn huskin’ bee duds are: Metamae Oglesby, and Becky Calloway. By JOYCE STEPHENS Each fall the Meredith stu dents and faculty members gath er for an evening of fun and entertainment at the Corn Hus kin’ 6ee. The evening begins in the gaily decorated dining hall at dinner when everybody comes in couples, dressed as boy and girl, in original costumes. Spirit is high that night because the Corn Huskin’ Bee is an occasion which students and faculty mem bers alike look forward to with great anticipation. After every one has eaten, the scene changes to the old auditorium. There square dancing, tall tales, origi nal songs, hog-calling contests, chicken-calling contests, and corn-shucking contests take the spotlight. Prizes are awarded to the winners of all these contests and to the couple whose cos tumes are the most original. There is fun and laughter for everyone as students and faculty members participate in these various contests. This year we are looking for ward to an even better Corn Huskin’ Bee than ever before. It will be held on Friday night, October 31. We’ll see you there!
