Drive Meredith students took part in the World University Service Drive the week of March 7-13. Organized in 1920 as the European Student Relief, its purpose was to meet ur gent material needs among univer sity students caused by the First World War. The slogan adopted was, “They would care if they knew, and know they shall.” Assistance to students and universities was on sound economic basis. Aid was pro vided without discrimination on grounds of race, creed, or nation ality. The only requirements for aid within the students were ability and proven need. Black, white, religious, agnostic, friends, enemies were in spired to work shoulder to shoulder. After the war assistance was pro vided for economic disaster, earth quakes, war. During the war it cared for student prisoners of war and refugees, supplied books and food, and rebuilt war-torn universi ties. Recently the main interest has been on Southern Asia, the Far East and the Middle East. W. U. S. is sponsored by such organizations as International Union of Students, World Union of Jewish Students, Pax Romana, and World Student Christian Federation. It is the only organization which appeals only to students and faculty to aid other stu dents and faculty. W. U. Morgan Street PHONE 5536 Suzanne Davis Is Off to Switzerland It seems as if, just about this time in every spring term, people start looking forward to summer vacation and talking about all the exciting things they’re planning; but so far, the most exciting plans are those of Suzanne Davis. She’s off to Switzer land! Suzanne will be a delegate for the International Farm Youth Ex change programs, sponsored by the National 4-H Foundation. Six stu dents—four boys, Suzie, and an other girl — will represent North Carolina in this exchange of ideas. The plan is for each of the students to live with a farm family (Suzie thinks hers will probably speak French), in order to share ideas and thoughts, to understand and to ap preciate the two countries and their customs. The group will sail from Quebec June 18 and will return to the States November 10, having had a weeks’ orientation program in Washington, D. C. Suzanne tells us that, once in Switzerland, she is expected to take part in as many forms of activities as possible. Her major problem now is to learn how to milk! ters, student health, educational sup plies, service for refugee students. Students all over the world pool their resources to help needy fellow stu dents in their own and other coun tries.
