Glowing Reports Arrive
From Travelers Abroad
Our returning girls have no doubt
noticed that several familiar faces
are missing this year from Meredith.
We have two “absentees” who are
sojourning in faraway lands. Miss
Loyce White, formerly with Mere
dith’s art department, is at the pres
ent studying in romantic Florence,
Italy. During the year or so that she
will reside in Italy, Miss White plans
to visit historic Rome and other
places of interest in that fascinating
country. Having chosen Florence,
the cradle of Renaissance art, be
cause of its stimulating atmosphere,
she is primarily concentrating her
study upon realistic painting of
figures, landscapes and portraits.
Anyone interested in corresponding
with Miss White may write her in
care of General Delivery, American
Express, Florence, Italy.
Another traveler in a foreign land
is our former house director, Mrs.
John B. Mayes. She has returned
to the Sorbonne in Paris, France,
where she received a portion of her
education. Mrs. Mayes, planning
to remain in Paris until next sum
mer, is visiting the family with
whom she hved when she was a
student. In a recent letter to Miss
Sally Holland, English instructor at
Meredith, Mrs. Mayes commented,
“I am really enjoying French
dishes and service. We never get up
before 9:00 in the morning — we
have our petit dejeuner served in
the bedroom. I have revisited many
of the interesting places in Paris
and enjoy them as much or more
than when I was a student at the
Sorbonne.” Among the sights she
has visited are the Grand Palais
featuring a display of automobiles
from various countries, and the
Opera, which has just undergone
expensive renovation. She also
stated that the French, who love en
tertainment of various sorts, keep
the movies, theaters and opera
houses filled to capacity. Mrs.
Behind the Scenes . . .
We Recognize Betsy Lane
Peeking behind the scenes, we
come face to face with a lovely
junior, Betsy Lane. Majoring in
elementary education, Betsy has
proved herself an admirable mem
ber of the Meredith “family.” At
present she is hall proctor of third
Stringfield, a member of the Stu
dent Government Council, a so
prano in the Chorus, program chair
man of the junior “Stunt,” and a
member of the Oak Leaves staff.
An excellent student, Betsy was
chosen as a freshman counselor last
year and has been on the Dean’s
List several times in her college
career. Incidentally, pretty Betsy
has captured such titles as “Miss
Randolph County” (she was one of
the top ten finalists for “Miss North
Carolina” in 1955!) and sponsor
and sweetheart of Sigma Phi Epsi
lon fraternity at State College. The
junior class is proud to present her
as one of its representatives in
Meredith’s May Court this year.
Turning ta the lighter side of
Betsy’s busy life, an eavesdropper
(or reporter) might catch Betsy in
forming someone, “You are about
as smart as a bush!” Don’t let this
get around, but . . . she does toe
exercises in bed and occasionally
snores (lightly) in her sleep! She is
known for her neat, perfectly
groomed hair and spends much
time on keeping her appearance
“yummy.”
P.S. Would Peanut ever get to
class on time without the able as
sistance of her suitemate?
