HOLIDAYS SPENT
IN THE BIG CITY
By KAY E.
Thanksgiving holidays was a time
of a wonderful trip for Jeanne Grea-
lish, Susan Moss, and me. Meeting
Mrs. Russell Anstett ,and joined by
Cathy Atkins, we spent a glorious
holiday in the metropolis of New
York City. Our mode of transpor
tation afforded an exhilarating ex
perience — we flew! ft was my
first trip “up,” and it was — well,
“flying” is the only word to des
cribe the sensation.
Staying at the Abbey Hotel, we
were a block from Radio City and
a block and a half from Broad
way. We saw the fabulous show at
Radio City Music Hall with its
mcllow-toned organ appearing sud-
dently from within the wall, its or
chestra rising from the floor, and
its beautifully lighted auditorium.
The ballet and the Rockettes gave
us different kinds of dance well
done, and after that we enjoyed
the movie Friendly Persuasion.
Observe United Nations
The trip was educational as well
as entertaining. We toured the
beautiful United Nations’ Building,
and sat in on a plenary ^session of
the General Assembly while the
Suez crisis was being discussed. An
Egyptian delegate spoke that day,
among other speakers, and it was
very interesting to listen to the
interpretations of the speeches
through the headphones provided.
Tour Metropolitan Museum
An afternoon in the Metropoli
tan Museum of Art was a pleasure
JOHNSON
and a privilege. 1 feel that I know
a little about European paintings
from spending practically the whole
afternoon in that section of the mu
seum. Just that tiny brush with
“culture” has'brightened my whole
outlook towards art and has given
me a curiosity to learn about the
things I saw.
Visit Churches and Cathedrals
Sightseeing and window shopping
took us to Fifth Avenue and some
of the magnificent cathedrals and
beautiful churches of the city.
Among the sanctuaries we visited
were* St. Patrick, St. John, St.
Thomas, and Fifth Avenue Presby
terian. Feelings of awe, splendor,
and reverence prevailed.
Thanksgiving service we attended
at the Fifth Church of Christ, Scien
tist. We attended the beautiful
Riverside Church on Sunday morn
ing. The sermon by Dr. McCracken,
the organ music by Virgil Fox, and
the ethereal presentations of the
choir were very inspiring. On Sun
day afternoon Haydn’s Creation
was presented by the choir of St.
Bartholomew.
Miss Jean Swanson, in New York
studying on a Danforth Scholarship,
sent her regards to everyone. We
ate lunch on Sunday with her at
the International House where she
lives.
See Broadway Plays
Everything about the trip was
wonderful, but the highlights, to me,
were plays we saw in the legitimate
theaters.
Behind the Seenes . . .
We recognize Molly James
It always hurts, I think to try
reducing something very big, some
thing almost undefinable into a mass
of arbitrarily chosen words. This
hurts especially when you feel
so deeply that a person really
“has something” within that others
should be made to appreciate.
She is a junior (that in itself is
— I’m prejudiced?!) who spends
much time in the music building
working toward that major in public
school music or . . . attending the
meetings of the honorary music fra
ternity (i.e. S A I!!)
She holds one of the most de
manding, ever-present (and per
haps least appreciated), jobs on
campus as chairman of Vespers.
This is a function of the Devotional
Vice-President of B.S.U. which of
fice she carries out with dedication
and concentrated effort.
Upholding the opinions of those
who awarded her the freshman
scholarship, she maintains high
scholastic averages, often is named
on the dean’s list, does consistently
good work for the public relations
office, and serves as president of
her Sunday school class.
Then — for “leisure” (what is
it?) she sews, listens to Debussy
and Rachmaninoff, and takes the
room apart looking for dead rats!
There’s more. . . . she also plans
