CLASSROOM CHARACTERS
Classes Can Be Funny
By PEANUT SWINDLER
To me this going-to-class business
can be pretty funny at times -
besides the big joke when you’re
asked to hand in homework you
haven’t done. The real funny part
of classes is the people. In just one
class the other day I noticed many
people in different positions that
were funny looking, and I had to
laugh out loud and jot down ac
curate notes to report to you cor
rectly.
In one class is the typical nervous
person who, in her haste to get
away, can’t keep her feet still. It’s
maddening to see this vague move
ment from the corner of your eye,
isn’t it? The swinging of the leg
from a crossed position of the knees
in a jerky motion that approaches
a nervous twitch is the most com
mon practice I have observed. In
contrast to this person, who seems
so eager to leave class, is the one
who strolls into class nonchalantly
and settles in a slouched position
in her chair with apparent intent to
stay all day.
This character leads to another
— the person who supports the
class — the sleeper (pun!). She can
be found in any class. She closely
resembles the sloucher or slumper,
but is distinguished by drooped and
ultimately closed eyelids.
One of the (ha, ha) funniest
(ha) sights to me (I just can’t help
laughing even now) is the person
(ha, ha) . . . the person who . . .
well, the person seems to have
slipped from my mental picture just
now. Oh, there are lots of funny
MUSICAL NOTES
(Continued from page two)
Musicales are given each month by
members of the music fraternity.
Jeanne Grealish will present her
graduation recital in voice on
March 12. This is one you will not
want to miss!
For all the voice students comes
this “punny” statement from one of
our most distinguished music faculty
members: “Give a singer enough
rope, and she will hung-go herself.”
The same could apply to music
column writers too! But I just can’t
resist this last bit of news concern
ing one of our foremost young
pianists: Did you know that Nancy
Perkins, junior piano major, won a
beauty contest back in ’37? (“She

must have been a beau-ti-ful
baby.”)
DR. SYRON NOMINATED
(Continued from page one)
at the convention in April. Serving
this year as State Legislative Pro
gram Chairman, Dr. Syron has
spoken recently in Oxford, Salis
bury and Asheville.
PHI PARTY HAS
IRISH FLAVOR
On Saturday night, March 2, a
Phi party was held in Society Hall.
Members from both societies at
tended the event. Entertainment was
provided by the Phis and the Sigma
Phi Epsilon and the Sigma Chi fra
ternities at State College. The event
followed a Saint Patrick’s day
theme.
people in a classroom —- the person
who checks her watch every three
and a half minutes but won’t be
time-keeper for a basketball game,
because she can’t tell time. There
is the gal who laughs hysterically
at all the teacher’s silly jokes (not
I). Yes, there are characters.
But they aren’t all students. I
mean, some of the teachers are . . .
real . . . don’t you think they’re
pretty funny, too, sometimes? Like
the teacher who saw a student
yawning and returned the yawn
with another yawn. (It was funny
at the time.) Another professor
who professes knowledge of the pos
sible danger of schizophrenia com
mences to assume the role of two
people as he bounces around the
room. One time he’s the Lone
Ranger; another time Mark An
thony.
Now don’t get me wrong. I’m not
complaining. Personally, I think
they’re as funny as everything and
I love them. Now if you think I’ve
been writing about you, you can
just forget the whole idea; ’cause
I’ve got a special section in my
head that allows me conveniently
to forget about whom I have
written.

PHI SWEETHEART
IS SELECTED
The Phis report that considerable
interest was evinced in the recent
contest, in which every girl was in
vited to bring a picture of her
“sweetheart” to be put on display
in the Bee Hive and then judged
by votes from the students.
A very handsome young man
named Buddy Gentry came out on
top. The lucky girl who entered his
picture is Lee Pass, a member of
the junior class. Buddy is from
Ca-Vel, North Carolina, and is in
textile engineering at State College.
The Phis are sending him a pair of
cuff links as a gift.

Faculty Appreciation Day
Thursday, March 7, was offi

to the Astro meeting that night, at
which a special minstrel show was
presented.

EXHIBITS SEEN
IN ART GALLERY
One of the main features of Joy
ner Hall is the new art gallery.
Many interesting and colorful ex
hibits have been shown there this
year, ranging from art work done
by the children in the Charlotte
public schools to famous prints of
Japanese paintings. Many who
have seen these exhibits have
greatly enjoyed them and can
thoroughly appreciate the work and
effort put into them by Mr. Reyn
olds and Mr. Gaboda.
Several exhibits have already
been planned for this spring. On
March 15 the alumnae are plan
ning an Art Seminar; art works by
former art majors will be exhibited
in the gallery during that week. Mi.
Gaboda is also scheduled to present
an exhibition of some of his work.
These two exhibits should be es
pecially interesting.
The senior art majors are now
working on their senior exhibits
which will be “one-man shows”
some time this spring. The majors
planning to exhibit are Bobby Lin-
ville, Donna McKinley, Carol
Whedbee, and Carol Cooke.
Another very colorful exhibit will
be the one by the art education
and design classes. Representative
works from their term projects will
be on exhibit, these will include
such things as mobiles, masks, ani
mals and toys made from boxes,
and many kinds of imaginative de
signs made from coat hangers and
papier mache.

Business Women’s Club and the

Active in day student activities,
she has served as third vice-

In spite of her many responsi
