CLUB NEWS
YWA
At the Young Women’s Auxiliary
meeting on Wednesday^ Novem
ber 8, the foreign mission study
book for the year, Your Guide to
Europe, by Rosalind Barker, will
be taught. Beginning at 6:30 p.m.,
the meeting, which will be held in
the Hut, will include a supper for
all Y.W.A. members.
After the meal, Mrs. R. C. Briggs
of Wake Forest will teach the book
from seven o’clock until nine. Since
Mrs. Briggs has traveled extensively
in Europe and visited all the coun
tries discussed in the book, she is
especially well qualified to teach
the course.
Art Club
President Kay Simpson announced
that plans are underway for a sale
of student work as a project of the
Alpha Pho Tau Art Club. The sale
is planned for a date between
Thanksgiving and Christmas holi
days.
For the November 29 meeting of
the club, the program will be a panel
discussion concerning the problems
confronting the artist.
IRC '
The International Relations Club
heard a representative from State
College discuss plans for the Model
United Nations Assembly to be held
in Raleigh next February. At that
time Meredith College wiU send five
delegates to represent a chosen
country.
Members of the IRC will serve
as hostesses in co*operation with
State College for the event.
Granddaughters'
Club
At a recent meeting the Grand
daughters’ Club made plans to raise
money for the Needlework Guild in
Raleigh which provides clothes
for underprivileged children. Plans
were also discussed concerning the
“family tree” survey which is made
on campus. The information will be
published in the Alumnae Maga
zine when the information has been
compiled.
Sociology Club
The Sociology Club will present
a student program on summer jobs
at the November 1 meeting an
nounced Judy Smith, president.
Business Club
Mr. Walter A. Watts of the firm
Watts and Byrd, CPA in Raleigh,
will be the guest speaker at the No
vember 8 meeting of Tomorrow’s
Business Women. His talk will fol
low the club theme for the year
“Your Future in Business.”
Plans for preparations of the An
nual Christmas list by the club
members will begin the end of No
vember in order to complete the
list in time for sale to Meredith
students.
Home Eg Club
At the November 9 meeting of
the Home Economics Club a rep
resentative from Burton’s who
decoratcs store windows will speak
to the club members. The meeting
will be held at 7:00 in Hunter Hall
and will emphasize the club idea

after graduation.
Student League
A stop light at the Meredith Col
lege - Hillsboro Street intersection
will be the topic under discussion at
the November 7 meeting of the Stu
dent League of Women Voters.
Plans will be completed to take ^is
issue to the City Council and also
to discuss student opinion by pe
tition.
Mr. Goff, the new club sponsor,
will also speak at the next meeting.
Psychology Club
The Psi Chi Psychology Club has
invited Dr. Grady Davis, a member
of the religion department at
Shaw University to talk at the next
club meeting which will be held in
first Brewer Parlor. Dr. Davis ob
tained his doctorate from the Father
Divine community in Philadelphia,
Pennsylvania, and will speak to
Meredith students on the Father
Divine Movement at tfie meeting of
the Psychology Club.
English Club
The Colton English Club met last
week to discuss plans to place a
magazine subscription in the infir
mary. The program for the Novem
ber 14 meeting will be a talk by
Dr. Carlyle Campbell to the club
members.
Latin Club
New officers for the school year
were elected at the first meeting of
the Price Latin Club. Sarah Smith
was chosen president; Martha Mc-
Lester, vice president and program
chairman; Kay Burns, Secretary;
Catherine Stovall, treasurer; and
Brucie Tull, social chairman.
At the second meeting of the club
plans were completed for club year
books, and ideas for a Christmas
Saturnalia were discussed.

Foods Class Takes
Local Field Trip
After completing a unit on food
preservation, the sophomore foods
class took a field trip to Farmer’s
Market where they saw how foods
come in and are stored. They
learned about places where the food
comes from to the market. The
manager, Mr. Graham, gave the
class a personally conducted tour,
and made it possible for them to
get a behind the sccne view of food
distribution.
The class also went through the
Swift and Company plant. They
viewed cold storage of meats first
hand. At the plant they were given
a demonstration on meat cutting.
The trip ended at “Cedar Chest,”
Miss Ellen Brewer’s cabin, for a
weiner roast. Jean Davenport and
Ann Sorrell were responsible for the
food.
Spanish Club Has
Halloween Party
“More contact between Spanish
American families and our stu
dents” is the theme of La Tertulia
Spanish Club staled Miss Lucy Ann
Neblett, the club advisor. To carry
out the theme a Halloween party
for the Meredith Spanish Club
members, Latin American students
from State College, and some Latin
American families was giyen in the
Hut on October 18.
As a project for the year, the
Spanish Club is sponsoring ex
change correspondence. Miss Neb
lett sent the names and addresses
of the students taking Spanish to a
monthly publication, Muno Hls-
panico, in Madrid, Spain. The pur
pose of this project is to better re
lations between students in Spanish
and English speaking countries.
In addition to writing letters in
Spanish, the students have been
talking to two girls visiting in
Raleigh from Columbia, South
America. Adelaida Lopez and
Norela Madrinan plan to stay in the
United States until next June and
at present are attending second year
Spanish classes at Meredith so they
can learn the English language.
Norela is the sister of Mrs. Luis
Camacho whose husband is study
ing at State.
