Also on Thursday night, the cere mony of Silver Mac’s retirement from the show ring was held. The announcer read the following ac count: ‘Tonight with respect and ad miration, we recognize the retire ment of the noteworthy Silver Mac. Sired by Grey Mac, this walk-trot gelding has been the recipient of literally hundreds of ribbons and has never been out of the money. Over the years he has served as a mount in Three-Gaited, pleasure, and equitation classes. Only four years ago. Silver Mac’s equitation rider received fifth place at Madi son Square Garden competing in a class of 31 riders. To present Mac with a token of the pride Meredith College takes in his faithful service is Mrs. 2^no Martin. Zeno Martin, once business manager of Meredith College, saw the opening of the Meredith Col lege Stables. Silver Mac was one of the first horses to be used by the students. Meredith graduates of the late 40’s remember Silver Mac. Some of them learned to ride on him. Now 24 years of age, Silver Mac is duly honored as he retires from the show ring. He continues to serve the college and student rid ers at Meredith. Proudly we salute Mac with this, his final appearance in the ring. Mac was presented a horseshoe of red carnations despite his reluctance to accept it. The an nouncer commented that Mac, just like people, hated the thought of retiring. Though he will not show any more, we shall still use Mac here at school for riding classes. Mrs. Mary Mackay Edwards, our Meredith riding instructor, rode Rare Gold Again in two three- gaited classes in which the mare placed fourth. In a class for three- gaited horses with natural tails. Belle, ridden by Rita Goodwin, won fourth place; and Crafty Contract, ridden by Lynn Abraham, won sev enth among nineteen competitors. Crafty Contract, ridden by Jane Hendricks, was the Champion Pleasure Horse chosen from a huge open class. Mr. Sunshine, the Mere- y Jane Hendricks proudly displays tbe silver ray wbkh was given her as first prize. dith horse which won the pleasure championship last year, won fifth place. Meredith graduates of 1964, Nicky Childrey and Jerry Lou Hol- bert, came to Raleigh to attend the horse show and to revisit Meredith friends. Nancy von Elm, last year a Meredith .sophomore, showed her Morgan gelding, Mr. Showhawk, from Virginia Beach, Virginia. Mr. Showhawk won second and third places iti two Morgan classes. For the riders and horses from Meredith, the week of the State Horse Show was a busy and excit ing one. For Silver Mac, the show was a big occasion. Now all are back into the ‘’harness" of work, but the gala moments have left last ing memories. Even though lie is retired. Silver Mac shall continue to carry Meredith Kiris and Kale^h children. He will no longer participate in shows.
