H.Wellford by Lisa Sorrels With the Argentinean seizure of the Fall^land Islands and assorted Central American turmoil, peeoe and politics are two topics on everyone’s mind. Throw in food for good measure, and you’ve got the subj^ for Meredith's May Convocation. Dr. William Han’Ison Wdliford will speak on “Food, Politics, and Peace” on May 3, at 10 a.m. in Jones Auditorium. Dr. Wettford, who is a consultant to Edwin Meese, Counsellor to the President, is also a senior partner in the firm of Weiifwd, Wegman, Krulwich, Gold, and Hoff. He received his B.A. from Davidson College and was valedictorian. Weliford also \NBS a Marshall Scholar at Cambridge University and a Danforth Fellow at Han/ard. In addition, he holds a Ph.D. in government from Hansard and a Doctor of Jurisprudence degree form Georgetown University. Legislative experience and federal executive service also complement Wellford’s career. He has sen/ed under Presidents Carter and Reagan in the Office of Management and Budget^as well as working on the transition team (pre- Stockman). He has studied national security policy under Henry Kissinger and was the founding Executive Director of the Center for Study of Responsive Law, one of America's first public Interest law firms. As environmental consultant to the Center, he wrote many articles on government regulation and public policy for technical and academic journals, as well as for publication such as Atlantic Monthly and Readers Digest. Dr. Wellord has a unique perspective on national Ann Beattie Visits Meredith by Emily Craig Ann Beattie, author and lecturer, visited the Meredith College campus as writer in residence April 18-24. The visit was sponsored by the Woodrow Wilson Fellowship Foundation. Ms. Beattie aalved on campus Sunday, April 16, and was welcomed with a dinner given by the English department. On Monday, April 19, she read from her works during convocation in Kresge ~ Auditorium. The public was invited to attend the convocation free of cha’ge. The filmy Head Over Heels,” taken from Ms. ^ Beattie’s novel, “Chiily Scenes of Winter”, was shown Tuesday, April 20, in the Carlyle Campbdl Library projection room. The film showing was also open to the public free of charge. The movie has been rewritten and is currently being shown commercially in theaters as “Chilly Scenes of Winter.” Another of her stories was dramatized on Tuesday, April 13, on WUNC- TV during the "American Playhouse.” On Wednesday, April 21, a dutch luncheon was held In Ms. Beattie’s honor in the President's Dining room. Other activities planned for Ms. Beattie Included a visit with Dr. Gilbert’s class on Women Authors and a seminar with students on short stoiy writing. She was also available to work with campus writers a^d to attend Ann Beattie was the visiting Woodrow Wilsoa Fellow the week of April 19. a meeting of the Colton English Club. Ms. Beattie has written several books including: “Distortions” (Doubleday, 1976), “Chilly Scenes of Winter” (Doubleday, 1976), “Secrets and Surprises” (Random House, 1976), and “Falling In Place” (Random House, 1980). Her latest short story publications include; "Girl Talk," The New Yorker, November, 1981; “Like Glass,” The New Yorker, Febmary, 1962; “Mr. B. and the Miraculous Christmas Tree," House & Garden, Decemt>er, 1981; “Sunlight and Shadow,” Atlantic, January, 1962; and “The Burning House” (collective stories), Random House, 1982. . Ms. Beattie grew up In Washington, D.C. where her father was employed by the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare. She earned her B.A. from' American University and M.A. from the University of Connecticut. She received the award In literature given by the American Academy and Institute of Arts dnd Letters In 1960, the Distinguished Aiumnae Award from American University in 1960, and the Guggenheim Fellowship in 1977. Ms. Beattie received experience as a teacher and lecturer when she was employed as a Visiting Assistant Professor and part- time lecturer at the Uni'^rsity of Virginia in 1976-77. She was also the Brlggs-Copeiand Lecturer on English at Howard University in 1977-78 and Visiting Writer again at the University of Virginia in the fall of 1960. Ms. Beattie now resides in New York City. Students Breeze Through Play Day by Molly McGee Dorothy and Toto did not make it to Ray Day; however, NAeredith could have easily been swept to the Land of Oz because of the strong winds that ruled the afternoon. Even the annual Play Day ptente had to be moved inside because of the chilly, gusting winds. Breeze or no breeze, though, Play Day went on. And his concern for American and international public interest should provide a provocative final convocation for this academic year.
