MARCH 25, 1965 THE VMQ PAQE3 SPORTS Meredith tennis gets off on winning foot by Lisa Britt Monday’s weather tookatum for the worse but 40 plus degrees and cold winds did not slw down the rackets of the Meredith College tennis team. The Angds posted their first win of the spring season by sweeping Christopher Newport, 9-0. The opposing team from Virginia dropped Its record to 0^. The Angels played well and defeated their opponents in straight sets with the ecceptlon of one match. Tt^sa Duffy retained her number 1 position from the fall and defeated Carrie Jones 6-1, 6-0. Returning at number 2, Barbara Bulla de feated Jenny Nuttycombe B-2. 6-4. Num ber 3 Pam Fisher fought off Agnes Sater 6-1,5-7,6-2. Kinney Neal, who captured the number 4 position after sitting out the fall season due to illness, defeated. JoAnn Ervin 6-2, 6-4. Freshman and number5 player, Elizabeth Homthal, de feated Peppi Lilley 6-1, 7-6. Number 6 Laura Cochrane rounded out Meredith's singles victories by defeating Nessie Freemen 6-3, 6-4. in doubles action, Theresa and Bar- fc>ara gave up only 2 games in their win over Jones and Nuttycombe 6-1, 6-1. Kinney and fellow sophomore Dorcas Hostetler defeated Lilley ar>d Ervin 6>2,6- 2. Junior Melinda Wrenn and freshman Sara McMliiian defeated Sater and Free men 7-6, 64. The Angels have a busy week as they travel to Salem College tomorrow for a 2:30 match. They finish the week with home matches against Greensboro Col lege on Thursday and Ohio University on Friday. Meredith sweeps over Duke by Usa Brill Freshman outfielder Kelly Bagby racked 4 hits as she upped her daily bat ting average to .364. Sophomore Terri Marks hit 2 of 3, including a ctoubie, and Junior centerfleider, Teresa McMaster chalked up 3 RBI's, including a triple. Coach Bross announced her select ions for players of the day. Defensive Flayer of the Day was pitcher Sandy Du pree, yvt>o prevented several groundballs from turning into hits by stopping them at the mound. Sophomore shortfieider Buzze Mann was rtamed Offensive Player of the Day. Buzze hit a phenomenal 7 out' of 6 to boost her daily batting average to .571. Meredith's softball game scheduled for last Tuesday was cancelled due to a forfeit by Peace College. The Angels en- double header Meredith drops season openers ter their game Friday at Atlantic Christian College with a record of 2-2. Sandy Dupree batted In the game- winning run to give Meredith College ttie first of its two victories over the Duke University softball team. The Angels coasted to a less difficult win in the second game by holding the Lady Blue Devils scoreless. Meredith fought off a scrappy Duke team wTien the score was tied after the regulation 7 innings. Both teams were scoreless in the eighth inning. Duke celebrated early when they scored a run in the top of the ninth but Meredith retal iated when freshman Carla Quinn, who hit a homerun In the second game, bat ted in the run to tie the score again. With 2 runners on base in the bottom of the tenth and last inning, ^dy hit a line drive that sent In the winning run. Everybody's ears ate buzzing over the news. As the Angels saw be fore Spring Break, the Louisburg team was tough. And they played well again to defeat the Angels in both games.
