SEPTEMBEft 9, 1965 THE 7TWQ PAQE3 FEATURES Career Notes "When Confused, Don't Assume Try the Resource Room!” by Annette Thorpe I think one of the major problems I faced when ttansfer- ring to Meredith last Spring, beyond the problem of Mere dith’s immunity to males, was facing my future. What do I do? Where do I go? Does anyone care wfiat I am doing or where I am going? Likemany of you, I needed help with all of the above. Well, believe it or not, I found out someone did care about my future. I have Just recently started working for Mary Anna New man in the Office of Career Services. I suffer from “mal-irt- come”, Isetter known as lack of money. Being the brillant student that I am, I decided to cure this disease and get a job. I had heard of Career Services, but was unaware of the specifics, so I decided to drop by and get sonte Informa tion. Luckily for me, it was a step ttiat has proved reviard- ing. Ms. Newman needed an intern for this semester, and I needed a job. Being the brave person that she is, Ms. Newn^ hired me. As she casually showed me around the office, and introduced me to the other workers, I felt a feeling of security inskie as the other wortters smiled and greeted me. As I was led into a room labeled “Vocabulary Materials”, I was amazed at what I fourxl. This room cpr>- talned infonnationfor students majoring in anything from English to Wine Making! I was very interested to find a series of books available on not only the many different jobs, txjt the specifics of the Job, what type of work, sal ary, etc....There were books on other colleges and grad uate schools, as well as occupatior>al books on what jobs are available and how to go about finding the one you want! tt was very reassuring to know that infonrtation on the questions I had about careers and occupations was avail able for both you and nrte, to txowse through or check out. If you have any questions ^ut your future, I challenge you to drop by the Office of Career Services located in the Cate Center, and “don't-assume, try the Resource Room.” Eating Disorders Plague Women in Colleges icontmuea tmm page i] also health- and life-threatening. Whether or rot we have happy hours or drink specials, it is important for us to drink in moderation. And if you are blowing off a weekend and Know your plan on getting drunk — don’t drive. This year the senior class lost a poten tial graduate and many of us lost a friend wfien Jacqueline Edwards was killed by a drunk driver. I’ve heard people say too many times, “You won't believe what I did while I was drunk last night . . ..” Wouldn't it be horrible to fac@7&0f«dlfliTfh€tfflfmr^d^it to killing someone. With Rush winding up and otfter pre- and post-ganrte parties beginning, I ask each of you to think twk» or even more before you get behind a steering wfieel after drinking. IN THE COURTYARD by Kelly Wallace “If an emergency arose Vfd iarraly couldn’t get In touch with yoO in a hur ry, the school should be responsible." Natalie Fussell and Betsy Henney “I like It because It may eliminate the amount of obscene p/ione calls.” Usa Burch "I don't thirA prank calls are asking for numbers, they call at random and don’t really cause any trouble." Candy Slgnon “I disagree. In case of an emergency or if a friend comes to visit, they should be able to get your number upon ask ing.” Marie Owens “I’m sure this new system will be a problem for some students, liut I ^Ink it's a good idee because my freshman year I received several obscene phone calls - one right after the other for about a month from the same person. After a while, that gets scary. ’’ Wendy Hayes “If they only want a number and not where we live, I don’t think it's such a crime." Gretchen Holt How Do You Feel About Not Having Your Phone Number Available to the Public? I totally disagree v^th the new switctt- board information procedure - or sftou/cf I say lack of switchboard infor mation! I do not think that this policy eliminales phone harassment; Instead, it prevents friends from other campuses from getting In contact with us. I am In hopes that the administration will re consider Uils policy. ’’ Susan Morgan “i’m glad they don’t because if every body got my number, then some people would call that I don’t vmnt to call. Tonya Thompson “It should be up to ttte individual to de cide what calls she wants and what calls she doesn't want to t^e. Some one should be hired to scan cails In stead ofnofginr 'f numbers at ~'l." Hollle Thtj.nas I
