Call Haven Cooper straight Up With Steven The Bartender Steven J. Aystin Copyright 1965 Dear Steven: I have a wonderful re lationship with my llance and we plan on getting married this summer after graduation. My problem Is with the guy I dated before I met him. My best friend recently received a letter from him In which he said he still loved me and wanted to get back together. He knows I'm engaged, but said he couldn’t live without me and would die’if I wouldn't be his. Do you think there would be any harm If I wrote him a friendly letter? I feel sorry for the poor guy. - NO HARD FEELINGS Dear Feelings: Sure, you can feel sorry for the guy, but be realistic. Any response at all Is going to be Inter preted as an Indication that your flame Is still buming. Years ago I rrade the mistake of veiling to an ex-glrlfrlend who contacted me after several years. All I can say is that I quickly lost her ad dress after her husband called and threatened to blow rr^ brains out. She conveniently forgot to tell me she was married. Iviy homy good Intentions got me in big trouble. Forget about the wimp and the letter. DearSte.«n: My fiance wanted a day off from work, and asked me to call his boss'for him, saying he was too sick to call In. His request reminded me of a silly grwnmar school prank. I didn’t do It. This made him very upset, and he accused me of not loving him. Pretty immature, Iw't It? Was I right not to get Astros - Involved? - WHATS LOVE GOT TO DO WITH IT? Dear What: You made the right move. Your fiance needs a growlng-up lesson. Be the teacher. Dear Steven: Because I did so well In my freshman year my parents decided a little reward would get my second term off to a great start. They gave me a brand new set of encyclopsdlas the day before I left for campus. I don't want to sound like a spoiled brat, but for most topics, encyclopedias are a waste. When It comes to curent events and technical subjects, some of the infor> mation Is outdated before the books even hit the printing press. And most of my instnjctors tell us to avoid them. For the money they spent, they could have bought me a good home compu ter. The set has a 60-day money-bsu^ guarantee, and I'd like to suggest they return It, Help me to sound like the good guy. Please. - PICKY STUDENT Dear Picky: Tell your parents what you’ve told us. It makes sense, and I don't think you’re acting like a spoiled brat. Your explanations and reasoning make plenty of sense. Explain your thoughts to them, but be careful not to sound ungrateful. Encyclopedias are good reference works in many ways, but In today's vtorld of easy access to information, thealtematlves seem to be much more attractive and beneficial. Hang In there.
