OCTOBER 7, 19S5 THE TWIG PAGE 7 SPORT A Tough Fight; Meredith Tennis Volleyball Team Remains Undefeated! Monday September 23 at 10:00 am. the volleyball team pulled out of Mere dith for their two day trip to Virginia. Monday night the Angels advanced their record to 4-0 by defeating Shenandoah (15-17,15-13,15-3) and Lynchburg (156, 15-6). Susan Beck was the outstanding player of the game with her tremendous serves, spikes, and saves. Nancy Ratcliff and Sue Reese had quite a few awesome spikes at the center of the net. The entire team played very well, with the exception of a few lapses, but they pulled tog^her to t^e home two victories. Tuesday night the Angels remained undefeat^ with two more wins over Roanoke (15-14,15-0) and Randolph Ma con (15-2,15-10). The competition in the Roanoke game was not that great, but tf>e Angels never let up and took them with ease in two games. Susan Beck was the star server with thirteen straight sen«s In one game. Retfidolph Macon was a bit more diffi cult to beat, but Meredith was deter mined to stay undefeated. Paulina Romoleroux was the outstanding player of the game with her excellent sets. ^ Reese and Daiinda Dunn hit very well, and the key servers were Karen “Buzze” Mann and Dalinda Dunn with three aces each. The Volleybal I team made it home from Virginia early Wednesday nximing, but were on the road again Thursday as they travelled to Fayetteville for two matches. The Angels met their toughest competi tion Thursday when they played Francis Marion, a division II school. As the An gels walked into the gym their hearts sank when they watched this team, virtx> looked like the U.S. Olympic team, warm up. The Angels knew they faced the best hitter they had ever played against, but they constantly kept the bait on play and when the pressure was on, Meredith pulled through. The entire match lasted over two hours, txit the Angels came out victorious, winning (8-15, 15-12, 16-14). Sue Reese was rrK>st definately the out standing player in this match. She did a tremendous job on the back row and she kept us in the last game with her out standing hit return, she was 12 for 12! Sue had six blocks In the second game, and Nancy Ratcliff and Oalinda Dunn led the team with spikes; Nancy had a total of twelve kills in the match. At 10:00 the Angels began their se cond match of the night against Metho dist. Even though Methodist has a strong team, they did not pl^ very well and in the first game the Angels won fairly easily. Methodist started playing in the seco^ game, but Meredith did not let up. Meredith's blocking was weak, but their hitting was on, and that Is what car ried them through. Sue Reese had 11 hits, Oalinda Dunn had 7 hits with 2 aces,and Susan Beck hSKl 5 hits with 2 aces. Paulina Romo Loreux played an ex cellent defensive game with four saves. The Angels left Methodist that night win ning (15-3, 1&-10), and .... slill unde feated! Volleyball Meredith Team Brings Home The Gold The volleyball team pulled out of cam pus on their way to N.C. Wesleyan in Rocky Mount for an Invitational Tourna ment, Saturday, September 28. The tour nament hosted four teams, and played i n round-robin fashion, consisting of two 15 point games. The top two teams then played a two out of three match in the fi nals. Meredith’s firat game was at 9:00 a.m. when the slightly sleepy but ready-to- play Angels faced N.C. V^leyan, last year's tournament winner. Meredith won both games, (15-7, 15-2). Nancy Ratcliff was the outstanding spiker of the match with 15 hits and 8 kills. Dafinda Dunn led the team in ser ving, with ten points and three aces. Paulina Romoleroux also served well. Atl:00p.m., Meredith took on Metho dist College, v/fK> had already suffered two l.osses from the Angels this season. TTiefirst game against Methodist was the best of tfie day, with both teams playing exceptionally well. The game was close, but Meredith ended up with a 15-13 vic tory. Sue Reese and Nancy Ratcliff had 14 kills between them. Julie Jones played well on the front line as a sub. The team served well as a whole, missing only one serve the entire game. In the second game against Methodist, Meredith played thar woret game of the year. ITie Angels were ahead 13^, then the whole team suffered a mental lapse letting MettKxllst win 15-13. Meredith quickly recovered, however, by Amy Qupton The Duke Club tennis team defeated the Meredith netters 6-3 on September 24. The Angels only won one singles match, Elizabeth l^mthal took Kim Reed 6-3, 6-2. However, Meredith's num ber one player, Theresa Duffy, took Ste phanie Marcus three sets, but lost the match 6-2, 3-6, 6~4. Barbara Bulla was knocked off by Tracy Kl Ingeman 6-4, 6-1. Debbie Leland swept her match from Meredith’s Adrienne Gore 60,6-3. Amy Messick, number five seed, was defeated by Koleen Kirkwood 6-0, 6-3. To finish out the singles, Meredith’s Laura Co- Tennls Invitational chrane lost 6-4, 60 to Chris Freeman. Meredith looked much better in the doubles and won two of the three matches. Duffy and Bulla defeated Reed and Klingeman 3-6, 6-1, 7-5. Homthal and Messick came back to take their match 5-7, 6-1, 6-2 from Marcus and Kirkwood. However, Leland and Freeman beat Meredith's Cochrane and Sterns 6- 1, 6-2. The Meredith Netters will be hosting an Invitational Tournament here Septem ber 27-28, so let’s all come out and sup port the Angels! East Carolina Wins Tournament by Amy Gupton Meredith College was the sight of the Invitational Tennis Tournament Friday, September 27 and Satunjay, September 28. East Carolina University, Mara Hill College, Atlantic Christian College, Sa lem College, Campbell University and Meredith College all participated in the tournament. East Carolina University won the tour nament with a total of 18 points. Camp bell came In second with 12 points and Atlantic Christian was a dose third with 11 points. Meredith had 7 points, Mars Hill 3 and Salem finished with 2 points. In the singles first flight Ann Marv derfleld drew a a bye so dkj big Campbell’s Missy Hegister. Meredith's Theresa Duffy took Nanette Degroot from Salem and went on to beat Register, but lost her final match. Carla Hatfield from Mars Hill was defeated by Atlantic Chrls- tian’sSonailMukerjee. Mukerjee went on to t£d(e Manderfield and then Duffy in the final match. Atlantic Christian’s Susan Maxvtell went on to take the second flight in the Angles. She drew a bye In the first round and later defeated ECU's Becky Cle ments. Clements took Sandy Carawan of Mars Hill in tt>e first round. Bartiara Bulla, representing Meredith, also drew a bye and went on to take Lisa Van Meter of Campbell. Van Meter won her first round match against Salem's Tara Monaghan. Meredith was represented in the final match again with Bulla battling Maxwell. However, Maxwell took the match. Elizabeth Homthal was defeated in the third flight by Renee Payne of Mars Hill. Salem’s Elizat)eth Wade was beaten by ECU's Amy Ziemer and Zien>er went on to take Campbetl’s Karen Poole. Atlantic Christian’s Wer>dy Smith took Payne and went on to win the flight by defeating Ziemer. The fourth flight got undenvay with Meredith's Adrienne Gore taking onAtlan- tic Christian's Kim Parker. Gore won the match and went on to be defeated by Sara Gregory of Salem defeated Mere dith’s Amy Messick and went on to de feat Atlantic Christian's Susan Meyers. Kelly Pardue from Mars Hill lost to Susan Mattocks from Campbell. Mattocks then went on to win the flight by dtfeating ECU’s Holly Murray and Gregory in the final match. Campbeli’s Kathy Riley who drew a bye in the first round. Karen Eikeiand from Mars Hill won her match against Salem’s Bart>ara Stang. Eikeiand, however, lost her next match to East CanMina's Lisa Eichholz. Elchholz went on the final match and defeated Riley 6-3, 6-3. The sixth flight was dominated by Pi rate, Marie Swaim. Swaim defeated ^ffy Kirby from Mars Hill who had previously beaten Salem's Monica Carter. Camp bell’s Laura May advanced to play Angel Laura Cochrane by defeating Terri Peele from Atlantic Christian. May defeated Codirane, but lost to Swaim in the final match. In the first flight of the doubles ECU’s Manderfleld and Elchholz defeated At lantic Christian’s Mukerjee and Smith for the champior>ship. Meredith's Bulla and Ouffy defeated f^ister and Poole, but lost to Mukerjee and Smith. Other win ners in the flight included Manderfleld and Eichholz defeating Degroot and Monaghan and then knocking off Cara wan and Hatfield. Swaim and Myers from ECU domi nated the second flight by knocking off Homthal and Messick and then Van Meter and Riley. Meredith's Homthal and Messick captured Stang and Gregory of Salem. The final dout>les flight was captured by ECU's Clements and Murray. ThW de feated Mattock and May in the final match. When asked about the tourna ment as a whole, Elizabeth Homthal stated that she thought the tournament went well and that there were several ex cellent matches. Homthal also felt there was a good feeling in the air and no hard feelings. arKi they bounced t>ack to defeat a not very strong Salem team. Everyone on the team played and Meredith never let up - they won 155 and 15-2 with Nancy R^cliff serving well in the first game (7 aces out of 12 series) and Beveriy Gupton in the second (6 aces out of 10 serves). The final match was played at 4:00 p.m. and again it was Meredith vs. Methodist.'Hie team played well. Paulina Ronoleroux had excellent sets. In the first game. Sue Reese had four aces out of seven spikes. Methodist started to play well, but at the turning point in the game Karen “Buzze” Mann made several crucial saves. Dr. Cham- biee said that Buzze played the best game she's ever seen her play with three superb saves and several perfect passes. Meredith got psyched after those saves, and the whole team played with intensity. Nancy Ratcliff and Dalinda Dunn started hitting well, with each hit ting five aces. Paulina had one of her best setting nights of the season. Meredith won the final game 15-11, won the tournament and secured the 1st place trophy for the Angels. Meredith now has a 9-0 record.
