Turning Wealth into Gifts for the Needy
by Cynthia L Church
Co-editor
How much money do you spend in a
week? Twenty, thirty, forty, fifty dol
lars? Now be honest. Include your din
ners out, trips to the drink machines
and don’t forget the tailgate parties. Oh
• I l»t you almost forgot new outfit.
Have you reached the verdict?
For those of you that are suddenly
feeling guilty for t>eing so self-centered
and selfish, have no fear. The TWIG is
going to give you ar>d tt>e entire Mere
dith community a chance to help
others, as well as help yourself. What
more can you ask for?
Beginning November 1, 1965, The
TWIG willbeginafundraisertobenefit
the needy in Raleij^. The money col
lected from the students, faculty and
administration will be given to provide
food and blankets for tt>e less fortunate
people in Raleigh.
“People” is the Key word in the last
sentence. Prior to the tteginning of the
fund raiser, each of us needs to analyze
ourselves arnj our lifestyles. It's neces
sary to realize all we have, then, vye
need to compare it to what the people
we will be helping have. They are
people just like you and nte.
Everyone deserves to have food in
their stomachs and warmth throughout
their bodies, and with your help-they
will. We have ‘U.S.A. for Africa' on an
international level. Ar>d now we have
‘TWIG for Raleigh’ on a local level.
TWIG stands for ‘Turning Wfealth Into
Gifts.”
The fund raiser will stir competition
among the indivldaul residence halls
(CamDl and Carrol Annex will work to
gether), the various classroom builc^
ings (with Hunter and Weatherspoon
joining forces), arKi the administration
building (includir>g Belk Oinir>g Hall
and tfie Chapel).
Now tfiat you know your territory,
here's how it will work... The object is
to raise the most money edxtve $50. Any
group having under $50 will r>ot t?e eli-
gitHe to win the grand prize.
Prize, you ask? Those txinging in the
most money will win a free pizza pariy.
You let them eat, w^ll let you.
Every sulxlivision must fiave a repre
sentative wfK> will be responsible for

your group members to contribute on a
daily or week tiasis, and keeping up
with how much rroney each person

that don’t contribute don't get to reap
tf>e rewards If that area wins. Two-the
person contributir>g the most money

part should be an incentive for everyone
to collect money from outside sources.

Letters To The Editors
Dear Editor:
In my opinion, Meredith is a special
place. It has made me take things seri
ously; it has introduced me to people
that I had rx> idea that I would ever meet;
and it has made me responsible for my
self and my actions.
Lately I have noticed there is orte as
pect of campus life that some students
are not givir>g enough attention to and
that is their committment to the Honor
Code.
A student is not fully enrolled until she
submits to and signs the honor code.
This should say something of its impor
tance to the efficient operation of Mere
dith's Community.
Taking part in the honor code cere-
nnny was one of tf>e most memorise of
all my college experiences. It was then
that I, along with over300 other freshmen
pledged to cortduct ourselves in an or-
deriy manner, to support the rules and
regulations of the college, and to report
tfte vioiatk>ns of others to the proper
campus leaders.
What I do not understand is why these
actions are becoming few and far be
tween.
We futve only been in school for two
months arKi already I fuive heaid giris
speak of numerous things that I never
imagined would ftappen here.
One giri I know has had three pairs of

designer jeans stolen from her while she
was doing f>er laundry. Ar>other student
someone use her money and tier
tin>e to dry their clothes. She said wtien
she went to retrieve what she thought
were “dry clothes”, to her surprise they
were still “soaking wet". I hm heard
giris say that they are a little apprehen
sive atx^ leaving their rooms unlocked
and lastly it has been said that some stu
dents wtio have been ctx>sen to represent
their peers fiave had possession of an
illegal substance.
Those are just some 6( the offenses
that have occurred already. I think that is
et>ough for everyone to take a second
look at what the pledge to the tx>nor code
means.
The Horwr System is one of Meredith's
strong traditions. It sets them off from
other institutions. It is the life blood of
the total community.
Every student must take an active pari
in the system for it to survive.
I find it hard to inwigine Orientation
Week without an Honor Code Ceremony.
The system will gradusUly lose its
thrust if we continue to carry on as we
have been.
If we could just “do unto others as we
would have them do unto us,” the system
could revive itself and we could all live
together in “sisterly love.”
I think the system is worthy of respect
and we all have a right to re^wct each

Twig Sponsors Fund Raiser
The Twig will sportsor a fund-raising
contest for the underprlviledged in Ra
leigh tieginning Friday, November 1
thnMjgh November 22, 1965.
Competitions will be amor>g the differ
ent dorm halls, the faculty, ar\d the
administratton. The money raised will be
used to buy food and blankets for the
needy.
The hall, classroom building, or John
son Hall contributir>g the most mor>ey
CfverSSO will win a pizza party.
Every residence hall must choose a re
presentative to collect the money. Each
classroom twilding (Joyner, Harris,
Hunter, Music Building) must also
choose a representative. The faculty in
Weatherspoon will join forces with those
in Hunter. Those working in Cate will join
with Harris, and those in Johnson Hail
and Belk Dining Hall will wort together
and must have a representative, too.
The editors, Beth Biankenshp and
Cynthia Church deckted to involve the
entire campus instead of just students
because of the great need for funds to
h^p others.
All representatiws must contact either
the editors or managing editors for more
Information.
