PAGE 6 THE TWIG OCTOBER 28. 1965 STUDENT 1]WF0RMATI0N Infant Mortality: A Real Problem by Carey Bunting Ttie Meredith Sociology Club met on September 24, 1966 to discuss Infant Mortality. The theme of the Club this year is Child Related Healthcare. LuAnn McSwain, a nurse with the Wake County Health Department, came to Meredith to discuss some of the causes of infant mortality. Infant mortality is a general Indicator of the health of our society including socio-economic status. Infant mortality is measured by the deaths of 0 to 1 year olds divided by the total number of live, births that particular year. Ot'erall the rate of infant mortality has decreased in the U.S. but it is imporlant to know that the U.S. has an incredibly high rate of Infant mortality compared to other countries. The rate in North Caro lina Is higher than the national average and the rate in Raleigh is even higher than that. It is time to become alarmed!! Some- thir>g has to be done and it's up to us to get involved. Some things we can do to prevent Infant mortality are preconcep- tual planning beginning with family planning prior to sexual activity; edu cating expecting mothers on pre-rtatal and post natal care, finding ways to pre vent pre-term labor, and more school outreach programs. Remember most of us will be parents someday and nothing is nxire important than the life of a child! Become involved with the issues and help us fight for a better way.
