Straight Up Steven J. Austin STEVEN: I’m getting married in three months and am about to send out the first batch of invitations: Of course, all of my sorority sisters are planning to at- erid, andmanyof them will be part of the ceremony. I love them all. and would hate to think anyone would t^ave to make a msjor financial sacrifice just to get me a gift. V^^ould it be tacky for me to write something like ‘gifts not necessary at the tx5ttom of each invit«ion? The woman my mom chose to arange these things is a real idiot. After reading your column I Iviow you have more sense, and I like the idea of getting a man's opinion fora change. — BRIDE-T0-8E IN N.C. BRIDE; Thanks for the kind words. No matterwhat you wtiteyou know they’ll be getting you something. There’s really no way to prevent the well-meaning gesture. Sure, you can make a notation on the Invitation but I doubt you’ll get much compliance. Hinting around the house is another option, but don’t get your hopes up and be sure to have plenty of thank ^u notes on hand. Congratulations.. STEVEN: Here’s another one of those ‘flame still burning’ letters. He decided to call me after almost five years — all that time and not one word. I’m not married and am about as single as they come. He Is, however, and that, of course, is the major problem. I'd t>e tsack in his arms in a minute if he wasn’t, i'm just not the kind of woman who has the urge to break upanwiage. but if I say no to his lunch Invitation I know he'll just pester me until lgi\«in. I'm sure he won't be bringing his wife and kids along, so if I go for it What’s In A Name? We at The Twig feel that it is not only time to change our image but also our name. In doing so, we ask for your help. We feel this will be a posi tive change, and we will appreciate your cooperation and support. Please fill out one of the choices below and turn your response into your resident adviser. Thanks. o Don't change it! Here’s my reason why: □ Change it! My suggestions for a new name include: ■ We’re Changing Our Image, (which I probably will do), what's the t>est way to tell him I'm not interested in any thing more than a bite to eat and a hand shake? — NERVOUS IN GREENSBORO NERVOUS: It sounds like you have it all under control. Sure, many people reading this are saying to themselves, “Wdl, she can't be so positive she isn't going to fall for the guy all over again." and that's always a possibility. However, the tone of your letter didn't reveal those vibes. My best advice is to.be friendly but finn. Some say breaking a heart with a smile is a lot easier. Good luck. STEVEN: I'm putting together my Christmas list and need some help. What would be a suitable gift for my research assistant? He's a super kid and is always there wtien 1 need him. I know he loves to play golf at Myrtle Beach, but I'm sure he has tons of equipment, so tails and tees are out of the question. I want to spend about $50. Any hints? — DR. S., RA LEIGH DR. S.: A gift certificate for a round or twoof golf will be much appreciated. The better courses will be happy to accom modate you. Check with a local travel agent or golf course pro. If you can't get any help, a quick call to the Myrtle Beach Cf^ber of Commerce should do the trick. STEVEN: Why do all the girls carry on over the male stripper shows? Those guys are a bunch of studs interested In only one thing. It's different when men go to topless bars and strip shows. The average guy knows he doesn't have a chance with any of the dancers. But the male dancers — unless they're gay — will sack out with anything that wiggles. Do you think I should prevent my girl friend from wasting her time and money at those dumb spectacles? Her stupid friends always drag her along. — DAVE, WINSTON-SALEM JEALOUS: Why do you have to tie such a jerk? With a brain like yours to contend with I’m surprised she hangs around your space at all. Get off her back.
