EDIT O D I A L Blankenship: I bid farewell The powerful elite: who are they working for? The Student Life Committee. That group of students, faculty and adminis trators playing for high stakes. Giving a nod here and a shake of the head there. The ruling elite. I had always heard about them, but had never encountered them. And when I did, I found my suspicions were confirmed. At the time I was co-editor of the con- stitutionless Twig and my goal was to have a constitution passed for a new campus paper. The Meredith Herald. The debates over the new name and por tions of the constitution didn't bother me. My anger and confusion was not sparked * by what was being said, but by ^hat was going on. The Student Life Committee (SLQ states that as **a representative body," it shall approve organizational constitu tions. 1 have no qualms with that; how ever, I do when it comes to their approv ing constitutions of **bodies'*that are not Dear Editor: 1 wish to respond to your last editorial entitled “When the growing gets tough, the tough get growing.” First of all, I'd like to commend the co-editors and staff of The Twig on your accomplishments. The paper has indeed been greatly improved this year, and you do deserve our accolades. I must add, though, that it seemed in very poor taste to solicit praise in the editorial of a **pro fessionaP newspaper. If you are so con fident, know that you work speaks for itself — without all the drama! As for the argument to change the name of The Twig, your reasoning is represented. None of the publications are represented on the SLC, nor are over 20 mote organizations. The problem we have with unequal representation on the SLC is undoubt edly serious. Organizations are being dic^ tated over. Suddenly, the hierarchy pre vails. I questioned Renee Godwin, SLC pres ident, about my concern and she tried to explain that If every organization and club was on the SLC, it would be too big. She went on to say that “size" was the reason the publication's editors were re moved two years ago. When she asked if 1 could understand, I said “no,** then asked her where she thought America would be if suddenly the representation of people in government was limited. What if North Carolina had no voice, no representation in politics? 1 believe Meredith should reorganize the power structures, and have a system I E t T E K 6 weak. Why do you assume Meredith students are “women who usually can't wait to change their traditional names?” All the married women I know have kept their “traditional” names even though it is “tradition'’-al to add a new one as well. I believe The Twig should do the same and hang on to its maiden name. What's wrong with the old name anyway? You seem to think it symbol izes something “weak.” You also say it “reflects nothing about the school.” 1 see a twig as representing the newest growth of a tree. In relation, I see Meredith as the tree and The Twig as the tangible DAWN II^CCNCE ircic A4'CA PRESIDENT It is with deep regret that I must resign my position as co-editor of the Meredith Herald. I am offering my resignation because other obligations, both personal and academic, prevent me from giving the 100% effort that is required fora position such as this. My only wish, now as well as last semester, is that the paper continue to grow and improve, and if I, as one of the editors, cannot help to further this growth process then I become a hindrance to the more like that seen in “the real world," in “the free world,” Presently, there is no system of checks and balances, the ulti mate power lies in one committee. Shouldn’t we have several branches of government that preside over their organ izations; however, are under the Student Government Association’s constitution — which would be comparable to that of the United States? The clubs would have a committee set up including their presidents, two faculty members, two members at large and an advisor. They would approve each other’s constitutions, discuss matters involving them and would have the goal to work in the students' best interests. And should problems arise beyond their control and Jurisdiction, they would go to the Senate Continued on page 6 record of our latest growth. Is that so bad? In conclusion. I'd like to say that the improvements in the paper do not sub stantiate changing the name as well. After all, look how far this college has come, and consider all the changes and improvements that have been made over the many years. Still we call her Mere dith! You wouldn't change that now, would you? C. Michelle Baker Editor's Note: This editorial was re ceived last semester prior to the name change. M E K E D 1 T H HEDALD is recruiting now. I ask you to do the same, lend your support to the Meredith Herald. I have enjoyed working with and for you this past semester. The experience and friends I have gained can only help me with my future endeavors.
