Qui Jin — is the story of a Jin de siede
feminist, poet and revolutionary. She
not only rebelled against the ruling
Qing Dynasty but defied conven>
tional social mores. Leaving behind
her husband and children, she joined
other student radicals in Japan. In
1907, her revolutionary activities led
to her execution by the Manchus.
Given to carrying a sword and dress*
ing like a man, she epitomizes the
revolutionary romantic. With Li
Xiuming, Li Zhiyu. Direaed by Xie
Jin. From the People’s Republic,
1983,144 minutes.
Ah Fei — Generational conflict and the
changing role of women form the
themes of this film by Wan Jen, one
of Taiwan’s younger, more enigmatic
directors. Unlike her mother, the
“rapeseed” of the title, the daughter
demands the right to choose her own
husband. Ah Fei is representative of
the recent hsiangi 'u (grassroots)
genre. With Ch’en Ch’iu-yen, K’o Yi-
cheng, Su Ming-ming, Yen Chen-
kuo. Directed by Wan Jen. From
Taiwan. 1984, I IS minutes.
Run Away ~ Set at the turbulent end
of the T’ang Dynasty, Run Away
tells the story 6f desperate bandits
who propose to exchange their kid
nap victim for food. But the victim
falls in love with one of her captors
and he must then choose between
her and his comrades in arms. Run
Away is an exciting new action film
by Wang Tung. With Ma Ruh-fong,
Chaung Yln*jeng, Dem Big-Chen,
Wang Rey. Directed by Wang Tung.
From Taiwan, 1984, 114 minutes.
At Middle Age — Through the stoty of
a middle-aged doctor facing ill-
health, A/ Middle Age deals with
tragedy of that generation of young
Chinese ‘*lost” to the Cultural Revo
