With the arrival of the 1986 Spring Semester came the fifth annual Freshman* Sophomore Mathematics Contest. Pro fessor Kraines of the Department of Mathematical Science administered the three hour test to twenty-three partici pants on Saturday, January 18. The win ners were recognized with awards at the Canady Math Club meetingon February 18. Particia Hall, a sophomore, won first place and was awarded a tuition scholar ship of $200. Patricia received honorable mention in the 1985 contest. She has declared a double major in economics and mathematics. Freshman Mary Har per was awarded a SI00 tuition scholar ship for second place. Mary intends to study history and mathematics. Teresa Swafford, a freshman, received honorable mention, and Gina Howard, a freshman, was given a special merit award. Teresa may study mathematics and business, and Gina contemplates a major in mathematics and computer- science. Both students were awarded books. Professors Vivian Kraines and Olive Taylor supervised the contest. First, given in 1982, the Freshman- Sophomore Mathematics Contest pro vides students with the opportunity to use. problem-solving skills outside the con- fme$ of a particular course. Through the contest; the Department of Mathematical Sciences is pleased to recognize the aca demic interest and achievement of fresh man and sophomore mathematics stu dents, and it looks forward to sponsoring the contest next year.
