The Student Life Committee/Senate Relations Subcommittee was formed in January, 1986 to determine the “func tion" of Senate and Student Life. Its objective was to prevent the overlapping of jurisdiction between the two organiza tions. The proposals presented at the joint meetin* emphasize a “bailee arid dis tinction** of Senate and Student Life. Several changes in the legislative pro cess were proposed, including: 1. The elimination of the vice chair of Senate from the Student Life Com mittee. 2. The addition of two voting faculty members to Senate. 3. The addition of a conference commit tee to be formed after a second veto by Senate, Student Life or a vice presi dent. 4. The origination of legislation in Stu dent Life. 5. The addition of regulation origination in both Senate and Student Life. Senate and Student Life would work Senate investigates possibility of new halls by Kim Alien, Reporter Many students at Meredith College ^ve expressed an interest in having a non-smoking hall. The senate has looked W In res^ching the possibilities of the hall, Barrettt Parker, freshman senator, spoke with Dorothy Sizemore, I>ean of Students. According to Parker, Sizemore expressed an interest in having a quiet haU. If students show enough interested in the two halls then the idea will be ex plored. If the students choose to live on such a hail, the entire hall would not be non smoking, as Parker explained, “Just the parlor would be non-smoking." Meeting are being held to see how , much-interCTtthere is. The meeting for the non-smoking hall will b(T held Wed., April 2, at 5:15 p.m. in the Freshmen Center on first floor Vann. The meeting for students who are interested in the quiet hall will be held at 5:30 p.m. There must be 50 or more interested students at the meetings in order to have the halls. “If there is not enough interest, the idea will be dropped,” Parker said. with regulatory regulation proposals (i.e. male visitation or locks on bikes). Student Life would also work with non-regulatory regulations (i.e. aca demic policy or new bike racks). 6. The regulation proposals which origi nate in Senate and Student Life must be considered and approved by two- thirds vote of both organizations. 7. If both organizations approve the reg* ulations proposal, then it will be sent to the appropriate vice president for approval. According to Renee Godwin, student life chair, the Student Life subcommittee voted Jan. 21 to set up a committee com prised of equal Senate and Student Life Room deposit funds maintenance funds by Kim Allen, Reporter members. The need for this committee grew out of the “overlapping" areas in Senate and Student Life, Godwin said. For example, both Senate and Student Life had been working on the extension of Post Office hours. Previously, Senate worked prim arily with legislation and Student Life addressed student concerns. Due to the Senate's broadly defined function, the overlapping has occurred. “Senate has a lot of potential,"Godwin said. “We’re trying to develop a legislati ve/regulative process that more clearly defines the function of Senate so that the Senate and^Student Life Committee can work more closely together and the stu- place in Students at Meredith College are charged a $50 room deposit fee for each year. The money, if not returned, is placed in the maintenance fund to replace or to fix the damaged item. Charles Taylor, vice president of busi ness and finance, said that except for two phones there were no damage fees charged last year. “We are trying to pre vent substantial damage to the rooms,” Taylor said. According to Taylor, instead of going through the process of returning the money each year and having the students pay again in the fall, the money is trans ferred to the next year’s deposit, If a damage fee is charged, the student is asked to build the fund back up to $50. Students who will be leaving Meredith this spring are the only ones who will receive their money from the past year. Taylor said the process would lake ap proximately two weeks after the students leave. The two weeks are spent inspecting the rooms and processing the checks.
