sports The tennis team continues to excel si by Nancy Weatherly The Meredith tennis team is continuing to work hard and be rewarded with suc cess. The record is now 3-2. after romi»ng Queens Coilege 8*1 and losing to East Carolina 1*8 last week. (n the home match against Queens» the girls had a relatively easy time taking the victofy. All the top seeds won their matches, with the exception of Elizabeth Wilson, who did not play because of a pulled mus cle. ff7 seed Kim Bhttsan played in her place and won her first singles match. The top doubles team, Barbara Bulla and Eli zabeth Homthal posted a winning score of 6-3,6*4. The #3 double team, Jean Nichols and Angela Little, played for the fint time and won. Coach Massey also played all the singles players and was very pleased with the outcome of the match. To simply look at the final score of the EC.U. match would be very deceiving. Despite the wide margin of defeat, Coach Massey stated, “We played our best and closest match ^at we have played, against them.** Although only one Meredith player. Anne Whitesides, won her match (7-6,1- 6,6-4), ail the girls played extremely well. “With the exception of one match, all the matches were closely contested,** explained Coach Massey. Barbara BuUa lost 6*3,6- 2, while Amy Messick was defeated 6-3, 6-3. She and Emily Houser played an even closer doubles match, losing by a score of 6-4,7-6. Elizabeth Homthal also suffered a narrow 6-4, 7-6 defeat. Nevertheless, ♦ Coach Massey remains extremely pleased with Elizabeth's play. She commented, “Elizabeth is playing exceptionally welL She has made more progress than any other returning player, she has incieased her mental toughness and her physical skills,” • Good luck to the tennis team in their final three matches. Athlete of the week: Sue Reese, volleyball standout by Deanna Harris Because of her performance on Mere dith's volleyball team, Sue Reese is fea tured as this week’s “Athlete of the Week.” Sue, a junior at Meredith, began her volleyball career as a junior at Millbrook High School in Raleigh. She was encour aged to play by the volleyball coach because Sue was “well endowed with height.” Sue joined the team and filled the position of middle hitter. When she came to Meredith, Sue con tinued playing volleyball as a middle hitter. Going from high school to college was not too different for Sue. The high school vol leyball program she was involved in was “a really good one.” She says that the pro gram at Meredith is good, also. Sue said she loves volleyball because it is a "team sport where everyone works together. No one person is the star." She also feels that you get to know a lot of "cool people” when you play volleyball. Good luck to Sue and the team in upcoming competitions.
