Meredith Looking For A Few Good Women by Amy LaVoy Are you good at working with peo ple? Are you a born leader? Then Meredith College has a job for you —be a resident assistant next year! Applications for resident assistants were made available in the Dean of Students office on February 6. The deadline for returning applications is February 22. On February 26, there will be a get-acquainted party for girls inter ested in being RA’s. In March, the selection process be gins. On March 1st applicants are to sign up for Interviews with the selection committee, which are held on March 16 and March 21. On March 22 through 25, interviews will be held with the Dean of Students. On March 31, the final selec tion will be made and the new RA’s will be notified. An RA has various duties. Perhaps by Jayne Potter The 1989 Gullick Lectures were held at Meredith on Feb. 6. A keynote lec ture, a faculty dialogue, a reception, and a panel discussion were the day’s events. Dr. Leslie H. Garner, Jr. was the key note speaker at the address which was held in Jones Chapel. Dr. Garner, pres ident of North Carolina Wesleyan Col lege, discussed professional ethics and public responsibility. Sticking to the Golden Rule and doing what one thinks is right were Garner's two guidelines to ethics. On the other hand, Dr. Garner said that there are instances when the rule should be broken, such as; when it helps some one else, when options are limited, and when there is no ‘ripple effect' or adverse effect on others. Someone who is crea tive, friendly, outgoing, caring, and sin cere. Resident assistants are asked to be familiar with the rules and Honor Code of Meredith College. An RA must be responsible and must be able to assume the leadership of her hall. Being an RA is an excellent oppor tunity to earn some money while getting to know other girls at Meredith better. A panel discussion of trust wrapped up the day. Panelists included: Dr. Les lie Garner; Mr. Mac Murray, Associate Superintendent for Administration for Wake County Schools; Dr. Pam Gerace, Director of Student Legal Services at North Carolina Stale University; Dr. Don Spanton, Head of the Department of Business and Economics at Mere dith College; and Dr. Elizabeth Blair, pediatrics at Memorial Hospital at UNC- CH. The Mary Stowe Gullick Lectures are made possible by afund established by Jonathan Gullick in memory of his mother. Gullick’s intent is to make it possible for Meredith students to explore ethics, from a Christian perspective, from a variety of societal views. Series Answers Tough Questions by Kimberly Cook “It’s the end of the Iran and Iraq war, and peace negotiations are on the way, we hope,” said UNC-CH history pro fessor, Dr. Herb Bodgeman at the second session of the "Great Decisions Lecture" series. But the Arab countries are nervous and fear that war will resume with the sophistication of weapons. And "what does the U.S. do?” said Bodgeman referring to the Arab coun tries and the U.S.’s desire to continue getting oil from the Persian Gulf. The U.S. should promote momentum and encourage dialogue among the countries, he said. Sponsored by the Continuing Educa tion Program at Meredith, the “Great Decisions Lecture" series offers a wide array of topics and discussions through April. The series is free and open to the public, and students can also earn one hour of special studies history credit.
