They have again planned a Substance Awareness Week which Brown hopes will “not be a stuffy week but a fun one.” SGA is also co-sponsoring the recy cling project, so Meredith students can get involved with the environ ment on and off campus. The Cen tennial Commission is hard at work this fall planning events to celebrate this important event. The year 1991 will mark the 100th anniversary of the signing of Meredith’s charter. There are 16 different commit- ' tees working on specific areas and events. The celebration will take place throughout the centennial year. The Centennial Commission was busy all last year but a highlight came last spring on Founder’s day. A contest was launched to find a slogan for the centennial. The con test was open to students, faculty, parents, administrators, trustees, and other friends of the college. The commission received a total of 450 entrees. Sevenfinalistswerepicked, and from these a winner was voted on. On April 13, a picnic was held in the courtyard to announce the win ner. The slogan selected, “Honor ing our heritage, expanding our fu ture,” was written by Gay Elliot of the Campus Minister’s office. She received $100 and a packet of cen tennial souvenirs. Everyone at the picnic was given a button bearing the slogan. The slogan can also be seen on the college catalog, the handbook and on other printed material. Although the commission has already done a lot of work, there is still much to be done before the big year. Dr. Jean Jackson, director of the Centennial Commission, wants many more people involved. The commission has a new office in Johnson Hall. Anyone interested in working on a committee should see Dr. Jackson or call the Centennial office at 829-2839. card will allow students to receive discounts at neighboring businesses as well as at businesses throughout North Carolina and Virginia. Each student will receive- additional in formation on this program from SGA. SGA has many thrilling things planned, but Brown feels that one of SGA’s most important goals is to get everyone involved in some ac tivity whether it be student govern ment, a club, or a committee. She also wants all Meredith students to know that the doors of SGA are always open and each officer is willing to listen at any time — to problems or to praise.
