MEREDITH HERALD Vol 5 No. 3 Meredith College, Raleigh, NC 27607 September 19,1989 Mayoral Candidates Discuss Recycling by Krista Holloman Meredith Recycling Organiza tion of Mo:edith College sponsored a recycling forum in Kresge Audito rium Tuesday, September 12 at 7 p.m. Candidates for Mayor of Raleigh, incumbent Mayor Upchurch and City Councilman Charles Meeker, were speakers at this event. The two candidates addressed such issues as past recycling efforts in the city, the importance of recy cling, future plans for recycling in Raleigh, and how Meredith and other colleges fit into these plans. Both candidates feel the topic of recycling is an important issue in November’s election and to our nation. Upchurch remarked, “Raleigh does not face a landfill crisis now, although we will in the near future.” Raleigh is considered to be slow in implementing a city-wide recy cling effort. Both mayoral candi dates agree on this, as does the City Council of Raleigh. Meeker stated that Raleigh is “way behind, way behind on recy cling.” While Raleigh has been rather stagnant in the past as far as recy cling is concerned, plans are cur rently being made for a city-wide recycling program. On October 1, a pilot program on recycling will begin in the city.
