will be picked up twice a month.
Although the pilot program in
volves only five pCTcent of Raleigh
households and no businesses or
colleges, Meeker looks at it as “a
step in the right direction.”
If the pilot program in recycling
yields favorable results, then a city-
wide curbside recycling program
should be implemented.
Upchurch says the City Council
**does not anticipate a failure, but a
success” with the pilot program.
Efforts currently being made by
the city to recycle include tumign
leaves picked up by the city into
mulch and recycling oil from city
vehicles. Office paper is also re
cycled.
Raleigh has also broken ground
on Highway 64-East for the pur
pose of methane gas extraction.

year. That money could be used to
explore further recycling options.
Meeker outlined a program called
“Landfill Diversion Credit” that
could provide added incentive for
some citizens to recycle.
If this program is adopted by the
City Council, any person or organi
zation would recdve from the City
of Raleigh $30.00 per ton for any
goods they delivered to a recycling
plant.
Both mayoral candidates encour
age Meredith College to continue
its recycling program. North Caro
lina State University, University of
North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and
Duke University have also incorpo
rated programs for recycling, al
though none are as extensive as
Meredith’s program.
For recycling at Meredith, there
are green barrels located all over
campus. These bins are for recy
cling paper only.
Mayoral canctidates Upchurch and
Meeker applaud Meredith College’s
efforts to recycle and its interest in
city-wide recycling.

IVIEA'S First
Comedy Club Is A
Success

Meredith Entertainment Asso
ciation’s Comedy Club opened with
this year’s first act Sqjtember 6 in Le
Greenhouse. Paul E. Orwick and
Walter Coppage were Electric Zoot
Suit, a comedy team that performed
at Meredith last year.
Their act was a combination of
skits, improvisation, and a variation
of the play “MacBeth,” or as they
called it “MacBreath.” Three stu
dents “volunteered” to participate in
the play. Everyone enjoyed seeing
their friends a part of the act.
Electric Zoot Suit was entertain
ing and worth seeing. If you missed
the comedy team this time, be sure to
watch for their return.
MEA did a great job of decorat
ing Le Greenhouse and providing
nachos and salsa for refreshments. I
had never been to the Comedy Club
and was surprised at all the time
MEA put into it. Le Greenhouse
looked like a little nightclub.
MEA’s Comedy Club will pres
ent other acts throughout the year.
