Anyone who says Meredith's flag football Superbowl isn't serious
business, didn't watch the Super Bowl on Wednesday, Sept. 27! The
bowl, sponsored by Meredith Recreational Assocation, set second
Barefoor against second Heilman in some first-rate flag football. As
Bob Holliday and his crew from WRAL looked on, the teams played
hard and were cheered on from the sidelines. With a final score of 32
to 18, the seniors of second Barefoot prevailed. Congratulations to both
teams for making it to the Meredith Superbowl!!

Pop Quiz. It’s multiple choice.
Identify the following: Uxmal.
a. a bad turn at Scrabble
b. a prescription drug for ul
cers
c. the site of an ancient Mayan
temple in Mexico
If your answer was “c,” you are
to be congratulated. Very few of us
know much about the ancient em
pires of Central America.
An entertaining was to learn a
bit more about Mayan civilization is
now on display in the library.
Twenty-two photographs taken in
Mexico, Belize, Honduras and
Guatemala are hanging in a new
gallery space located on the main
floor. They document many of the
most important “Temples of Doom”
of the Mayan period.
The photographer of these im
pressive ruins is none other than
Sarah McCulloh Lemmon, Profes
sor Emerita of History at Meredith.
Miss Lemmon’s study of pre-Co
lumbian art history has taken her on
several recent trips to Central and
South America. The photographs
currently on display were taken in
1988.
Take a break and let your mind
wander to a distant, mysterious past.
The exhibit runs through Nov. 10.
