most unique and attractive parts of
the campus.
From a distance, all of us agreed
that the island and surrounding lake
was very attractive, but when we
walked out on the island and looked
over the edge I was embarrassed by
what we saw. A Coke can, frisbee,
strofoam cup, as well as other bits of
litter were polluting and destroying
one of the best attributes of the
campus.
I often hear people comment that
one of the things they love best about
Meredith is her beautiful campus.
The lake, however, is only an iso
lated example of the litter on our
campus. Everywhere you walk there
is trash which has been carelessly
and inconsiderately thrown on the
ground. I am sure everyone here
appreciates the beauty of the cam
pus and wants it to stay beautiful.
Unfortunately, too many of us are
unwilling to take the responsibilty
for keeping it that way.

Dear Editor,
Before I even start this letter I
have to be honest and admit that I
have always been pro-choice.
Anyone reading this who has par
ticipated in pro-life activities might
be tempted to stop here. Please don't
What I am writing about is impor
tant because it concerns every citi
zen of the United States. I promise
that what my eyes have seen would
make almost anyone weep.
Last month I started working at
a clinic that specializes in women’s
health care. My first day I was
preared to see protesters, but not 115
of them. When I went inside I was
preared to see women in desperate
situations, but not as desperate as
the ones 1 saw.
What I saw were women who
were victims of a system that left
them powerless. Women who had
never been given any reproductive
health care. Women who did not
know why pap smears were done.
Women who underwent their first
pelvic exam a few minutes before
they underwent an abortion proce
dure. Impoverished women who
wanted to carry the pregnancy to
term, but whose husbands or boy
friends refused to support them.
Victims of incest, victims of abuse,
and victims of rape all passed through
the door of the clinic.
1 said that what 1 have seen wcmld
make almost anyone weep. It made
me weep. The day after I left the
clinic I cried. I aied fOT the women
who I saw cry, and I cried for the
woemn who had seen so much pain
that they seemed almost numb to
mosr pain. Aove all I cried with fear
for those in the future, women who
will seek unsafe illegal abortions if
Operation Rescue has its way, girls
who will be kicked out of their homes
when their pregnancy becomes
apparent. The Sumpreme Court is
scheduled to hear three cases this
session that deal with abortion. The
decisions of these cases could sev-
erly limit women's access to safe
and legal abortions.
The protestors are still there
when I drive in on Saturday morn
ings. There aren't as many of them
as the first time. I see them holding
their signs and singing hymns. Ifeel
my muscles tense, I try to quell my
anger, and I say to myself, "If they
could see what my eyes have seen
they wouldn’t do this,"
Students interested in keeping
abortion safe and legal should note
that NCSU has a student chapter of
NARAL (National Abortion Rights
Action League). Meetings are held
on the first and third Thursday of
every month at 7:15 in 110 Winston,
There will be a letter signing party at
7:15 on Tuesday, October 10 in the
Link Lounge of Winston Hall. There
will also be a student bus to the Nov.
12th abortion rights march in Wash
ington, D.C., the cost is $16, sign up
this week. Interested students may
