Meredith Asks... by Kelly Massey Meredith students and faculty were asked what society should do about the drug problem. “I don’t think society is doing enough about it. It seems like the more time that goes by, the more we’re hearing about drugs. It’s killing our society.” -Michelle Cogdell, freshman, Richmond, VA “I feel President Bush should legalize drugs. This could increase the amount of drugs and flood the market Then a lot of people in drug dealings would lose money and the drug issue would die down.” -Nikki Burris, sophomore, Winston-Salem, NC “Society should legalize drugs because it would bring the crime rate down, drugs could be regulated, and that way it wouldn’t be that much of a problem.” -Kit Moseley, junior, Gastonia, NC “I think we should start with education(on drugs) in the early grades, and families should try to educate their children. Athletes and movie stars could serve as role models for children.” Valerie Payne, senior, Burlington, NC “I think it’s too broad and too difficult to address in any reason able policy way. The intemm moves that we should make are moves around building up'our cr.p..;ity to reabilitate and treat drug addiction. We should improve conditions of poverty and increase our capacity to arrest and prosecute our drug deal ers.” -Barbara TrueWeber, Political Science Department
