The absence of the team’s key player, Libby Avery, forced the team to make some minor adjustments. Filling Avery’s position was Anne Whiteside. “Whiteside had some very tough matches, but overall she played well,” Coach Jay Massey commented. Filling the number two spot was Teresa Burger. “She and Jennifer Bickus were the most improved athletes since last spring,” Coach Massey said. In the first match of the season, the Angels defeated Atlantic Christian College 5-4. hi the second and third matches, the team lost to Queens College 5-4, and Wingate College. 8-1, reflectively. The team then bounced back to defeat Campbell University 8-2. Following this victory, the team fell to Longwood College 6-3 and went on to defeat Methodist College 7-2. The Angels were unable to capture a win over East Carolina University, one of their toughest opponents, and lost 9-0. In the second match of Uie season with Longwood College, the team was nearly victorious, but could not manage to capture the win. Coach Massey stated, “Three of the sets could have gone either way.” Unfortunately, the team lost 4-5. The team had an overall record of 3-6. Although the team showed weaknesses in doubles, suffered tough losses, and underwent adjustments in player positions; the team dis played improvement and is expected to be much stronger in the upcoming spring season, according to Coach Massey.
