January 31,1992 page four violent crimes are committed by youths under the age of 17; teenage suicide has increased by 300% since 1955, and the U.S. teenage preg nancy rates are the highest in the world. Also, one out of every four females can expect an attempted rape or rape at sometime in her life, for a woman is raped every six minutes (Hoyt 122). Williams believes “The black family is falling apart, teen pregnancy regularly ruins lives, and 2 Live Crew is selling corruption and self-hate to vulnerable young minds in a weak black America.” I am in no way saying that the rape of the Central Park jogger of these depress ing facts are due solely to explicit rock music, but it appears that kids are certainly influenced by the glorification of violence. It appears that celebrities and peers have replaced parents and teachers as role models for the young. Some of what musicians are saying through rock lyrics can shape the attitudes of youngsters in the critical years of their lives; thus we must be conscious of and sensitive to what they are exposed to. The fact is that some members of a particular age and social cohort (the one making 2 Live Crew rich) stomped and raped the jogger to the edge of death, just for the fun of it. Children must not be taught to hate and abuse. They are not bom with violent thoughts. They learn from what they see and hear around them. As The New York Times says, “The history of music is the story of innovative, even outrageous styles that interacted, adapted and became main stream.” When 2 Live Crew’s “I won’t tell your Momma if you don’t tell your dad/1 know he’ll be disgusted when he sees your p—y busted, “ becomes mainstream this will be an interesting country, for there is nothing new about “selling talentless to the tasteless." Certainly, “the coars ening of a community and the desensitising of a society will have behavioural consequences” (Will 64). We must raise our voices in protest, pressur ing those who package, polish and promote this hatred. We must place a higher value on chil dren than on profits. America today is capable of an intolerance of smoking, or toxic waste that threatens trout and other aquatic life. But it takes a confused society to protect lungs more that minds and trout more than women. We legislate against smoking in restaurants and on airiine flights, but singing “Me so Horny” is a constitutional right. Items in a grocery store contain a visible list of ingredients, but records are not required to do so. Secondary smoke is carcinogenic, but the celebration of tom vagina walls is mere words. Aristotle once said, that words are what set human beings, the language using animals, above lower animals, — not necessarily (Will 64). SGA Gives Update on Le Greenhouse Changes Thank you to all the students and faculty who have been supporting the extended hours of Le Greenhouse. Your support is appreciated and indicative that the student body wants to improve social life at Meredith. HERE ARE THE FACTS; Thad O’Briant, Dining Services Man ager, reports that “response has been good!” The verdict on the month-long-trial-period is that Le Greenhouse will continue its extended hours as long as we show we want them. In fact, business is so good that the option of having extended hours on Thursday or Sunday is being consid ered. Mr. O’Briant will be meeting with the student workers this week to evaluate and to discuss actual figures and numbers. SGA has received several suggestions, and they have been forwarded to Thad O’Briant. Suggestion: Could you offer seasoned french fries, nachos and cheese, pizza, mozza rella cheese sticks, and bread sticks? Response: Thad O’Briant is definitely considering additional, night items such as those just mentioned. Seasoned, curly fries have already been added to the menu. Cheese and Bread Sticks will be added next week. Nachos and Cheese require more storage space, so they are not an immediate option. Pizza, also, is not yet an option because of lack of space and equipment. Suggestion: Free Refills Response: Thad O’Briant’s initial con- cem was that they would run into prob lems since they do not know when cups were purchased; however, he is considering marking the cups between 6pm and 11pm which would allow one free refill. Anotherpossi- bility is that refills may be offered at a nominal $0.25. Suggestion: Offer Sweet ‘n Sour Gummy Bears. Response: If ARA’s supplier carries them, that request will be no problem. Suggestion: Provide a smoking section Response: As of last academic year, it is campus policy that all buildings are desig nated non-smoking. Suggestion: Provide squeeze ketchup bottles instead of packets of ketchup. Response: Mr. O’Briant responds that packets of ketchup are more economical and continued on page five Meredith International Association Reports on International Week Events MIA (Meredith International Association) started a new event this year, the MIA Interna tional Week. With the goal to promote global awareness at Meredith, the week and all its events turned out to be a great success. The whole week had an international flavor not only in different events every day, but also in the exhibition and the international music playedinthecafeteriaatlunchanddinner. The MIA members also formed a panel by the exhibition table ready to answer any questions. The International Street Fair started the week with Palestinian Baklava, Swedish Ginger Cookies, French Croissants, and Pakistani Halwa on sale. The members also sold raffle tickets for gift certificates to the Beansprout, the Flying Burrito and international food. The Meredith community also bought MIA’s own cookbook with the best recipes from the worid. The Meredith faculty and staff enjoyed the annual luncheon where they were invited to mingle with international students and eat the students’ own specialties. That night, MIA showed the “wildly hysterical” Spanish movie Women on the Verge of a Nervous Break down. The MIA International Week was concluded in the cafeteria where international food was served during the international surprise show. The show took students on a brief trip around the world to all the continents represented at Meredith: fromEuropetheSwedishChristmas continued on page five Classifed Ads Child care provider (non-smoker) for 2 yr. old wanted Mon.-Fri. afternoons.
