News Hriels • Boris Yeltsin stood firm against hard-liners’ effortstoimpexhhim. Russia’s top court met Monday to discuss the legality of Yeltsin’s declaration of emergency rule Sat urday. Russia is still in a stalemate over who rules the country. • A Hillsborough police cruiser chasing a stolen vehicle Monday slammed into another car. The driver of the car was killed. The chase caused three wrecks. • Woody Allen told a judge Monday he “screwed up” when he began an affair with Mia Farrow’s oldest daughter. He contends he deserves custody of his three chil dren. • Accused of murder, homeowner Michael Seagroves appeared in court Monday. He is accused of fatally shooting a 15- year-old boy who broke into his garage last week in Durham. If convicted, he could face mxe than 20 years in prison. • Cleveland Indians pitchers Steve Olin and Tim Crews were killed when their fishing boat crashed into a dock during a break from spring training, ntcher Bob Ojeda was seriously injured in the accident. • Four ACC basketball teams made it to the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Tournament. Florida State plays Western Kentucky Thurs day, Wake Forest will play Ken tucky Thursday, Virginia plays Cincinalti Friday and North Caro lina will play Arkansas Friday. •In the second round of the NCAA Basketball Tournament, Duke lost to Califoraia Saturday, 77-82. Georgia Tech was defeated by Southern University, 78-93. by Christina Peoples Monday's campus-wide elections speeches were marked both by low attendance and low election participaton. The majority of die candidates mentioned how apathetic the Meredith students have become. Camille Hatch Juniors Camille Hatch and Jana Morgan are running for Student Government Association (SGA) President. Hatch made three con nections between the {M'esident and keys: the president helps individu als find their own key to success at Meredith, the ix'esident 'battles her keys” in support of other students. by Tracey Rawls Last Wednesday an underground publication was made available to Meredith students. The publication, F , was published anony mously. Articles in the publication criticized Meredith for failing to promote feminism. Copies of the publication were delivered to several administrators’ offices as well as to locations around campus. Dean Dorothy Sizemore and the pre^dent gains key experi ences to use after graduation. Morgan stressed the importance of listening to the students andexpressed a desire to carry on the progress made this year by saying, ‘Together we can take SGA to new heights.” For the office of SGA Vice-Presi- Janr.a Morgan dent, sophomore Amy Bond is run ning unopposed. Bond said she has heard a call for change ever since she came to Meredith and commented, “The way to change lies in electing good student leaders.” Junior Angela Toms.currently Solictor General of the Honor Coun received a copy. “I applaud the stu dents for stating their opinion. It takes courage to make a statement like that. A different opinion is healthy,” she said. “The publication would have been much stronger and would have re ceived more favorable attention with out the obscenity,” Sizemore added. Sizemore said anonymous flyers and letters have been distributed be fore, but she has not seen underground publications. ctl, is running for Honor Council Chair. Toms noted she had witnessed and participated in many changes, and that she wants to continue these changes in the Honor Council to bet ter meet the needs of Meredith. She said the Honor Council has been tied up in too many legalities, and she would like to see the x>uncil set standards, not laws to live by. Then the students would see the Honor Council as a protector of student in terests instead of a repressive institu tion. The office of Residence Hall Board (RHB) Chair is being sought by Jen nifer Smith, and Beckie Faw is run ning unopposed fw chair of Student Life. Smith has been involved with RHB since her freshman year, and she wants to contribute to changes in dorm life with total student support. Faw said, “Student Life is very pow erful and involves most any Meredith activity you can think of,” about the office she is running for. She wants to im]MX>ve the Meredith image with faculty, student, and administrative support. Faw plans to create focus groups from all classes to address the problem of student ^)athy. Voting fOT student offices was held l\iesday, Mardi 23 in the dining hall during lunch and dinner. The "Statement of Purpose" in the publication stated the students were “unh^y with the present status quo of our college and our society.” Jennifer Haffig, Student Govern ment Association (SGA) president, said, “My feeling, of course, is (hat these students could have accom plished a lot more by using the Her ald. Anyone can write a fiery edito rial, but it takes guts to sign your name.” Underground publication distributed on campus
