Meredith Herald January 26, 2000 2 Campus News Career Center provides resources for students Betsy Rhame StaH Writer The Career Center, which assists with career develop ment for Meredith students and alumnae, has announced their spring events schedule. Each semester, the Career Center, located on second floor Park, offers orientations, workshops and job fairs to prepare stu dents for the work place. The first Career Center workshops of the semester began last week. The “How to Write an Effec tive Resume” workshop was held Friday, Jan. 21. “It helped me get an idea of the important information to put on my resume,” said Suzanne McLamb. a senior- junior Sarah Heiney attend ed the Orientation for Seniors on Wednesday, Jan. 19- “It helps you organize things and look at your options in another way," she said. “It gives you options for after graduation that you may not have thought of.” The Career Center is work ing to promote several upcom ing opportunities this semester. The Career Center urges attendance at the “Looking Toward Graduate School” workshop to be held Friday, Feb. 11 at 10 a.m. in the Career Center. According to staff, this work shop targets particularly sophomores and juniors who may be interested in attending grad uate school. An informa tion session on co-ops and internships will be held Tues day, Mar. 21 at 5 p.m. in the Career Center. A workshop entitled “How to Sell Yourself in the Job Interview” will be held Friday, Feb. 4 at iO a.m. and Tuesday, Mar. 7 at 5:30 p.m. in the Career Center. This workshop is specifically geared toward preparing tor behavior-based interviewing. Electronic resume scan ning, behavioral interview techniques and electronic resumes are becoming more common. “Anyone participating in an employer interview needs prepara tion. Employ ers are making use of a wide range of new technologies and strategies in the job search process,” said Folger. ‘The Career Cen ter’s work shops are designed to prepare stu dents for these new tech niques.” An event for underclassmen is the Majors Fair, scheduled for Feb. 9 from 4:30-6 p.m. in Belk Dining Hall. Faculty, staff, students, and alumnae will be present to talk to students about different majors at Meredith. “It is a unique opportunity for undecided students to talk to many different departments all at once without making an appointment.” says Toni Rhor- er, assistant director of the Career Center and the head of the Majors Fair Committee. Students can also declare their major or minor at the fair, speak to Director of Academic Advising Nan McAden, dis- cu.ss study abroad and plan the rest of their college career. New this spring is an alum nae networking system. The Meredith Connection, which assists students in their job search and career goals. Folger encourages student attendance at all the Career Center's worlcshops and activi ties. Folger said, “To give themselves a competitive edge they owe it to themselves to be prepared."
