Meredith students lend Habitat a hand

During spring break, college
students escape to a variety of
places. Some travel to places
where the climate is warmer
and the scenery inviting. Oth
ers prefer a break at home with
their family and friends.
The variety of options out
there for a fun spring break are
overwhelming, but some stu
dents chose to participate in a
Habitat for Humanity project.
Meredith hosted a trip to St.
Petersburg, Fla., giving stu
dents the chance to work with
Habitat for Humanity. Six stu
dents participated, as well as
Sam Carothers. Campus Minis
ter, and Loretta Baptist, a grad
uate of Meredith. Carothers
and Baptist drove the van for
the students. Every year

First Presbyterian
Church, which was located

housed the group.
The first Sunday night
the group went to the
Strawberry Festival, which
is similar to the North Car

The group saw the south

their fill on strawberry
shortcake and chocolate-
covered strawber

After one day to
settle and take in the
sights, they set off

was a IS-minute
drive out of town.
The eight from
Meredith worked with
four regular volunteers
in addition to other day
volunteers, from 8 a.m.
to 3 p.m.
Though only Baptist
and Carothers had done
Habitat work before, the
group quickly found that

they set out for home, stopping

Carothers noted, “ I am happy
with the girls that went,
because we all worked well
together.” He added that he
enjoys road trips with students
because it gives everyone a
chance to really get to know
each other.
Baptist, who helped in dri
ving and keeping a steady
sense of humor within the
group, sai^she gained a deeper
appreciation for what Habitat
does. She also noted. “Every
one should devote one spring
break to Habitat."
Freshman Sarah Olson said,

make friends and have a great
time!”

Juniors and seniors gathered
together for a time of relax
ation and celebration Tuesday
night, March 20 at 9 p.m. in
Belk Dining Hall.
The event entitled “The
Midnight Snack" consisted of
an assortment of desserts and
games for the enjoyment of the
juniors and seniors in atten
dance, set against the decora
tion of numerous colorful bal
loons and candy-adorned
tables.
According to junior Amy
Michael, co-chair of the event
with junior Atyson Hardin,
they chose to have the event
later at night and serve desserts
instead of doing a dinner
because in the past, events
scheduled around dinner
haven’t worked as well.
The tradition of
junior/senior events began sev
