Meredith HerM March 21,2001 Campus News Meredith students lend Habitat a hand Lindsey Wray Staff Writer During spring break, college students escape to a variety of places. Some travel to places where the climate is warmer and the scenery inviting. Oth ers prefer a break at home with their family and friends. The variety of options out there for a fun spring break are overwhelming, but some stu dents chose to participate in a Habitat for Humanity project. Meredith hosted a trip to St. Petersburg, Fla., giving stu dents the chance to work with Habitat for Humanity. Six stu dents participated, as well as Sam Carothers. Campus Minis ter, and Loretta Baptist, a grad uate of Meredith. Carothers and Baptist drove the van for the students. Every year Carothers takes a Meredith team down to St. Petersburg to work in the Pinellas County Habitat for Humanity. The group left on the first Saturday of spring break and spent five nights and six days Meredith students work hard on a Habitat for Humanity house in Clearwater, Fla. in St. Petersburg. First Presbyterian Church, which was located right on Tampa Bay, housed the group. The first Sunday night the group went to the Strawberry Festival, which is similar to the North Car olina State Fair. The group saw the south ern country-rock band Alabama perform and ate their fill on strawberry shortcake and chocolate- covered strawber ries. After one day to settle and take in the sights, they set off for the work site in Clearwater, which was a IS-minute drive out of town. The eight from Meredith worked with four regular volunteers in addition to other day volunteers, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Though only Baptist and Carothers had done Habitat work before, the group quickly found that past experience is not necessary when work ing widi Habitat. After work on Thursday, they set out for home, stopping for the night in Savannah, Ga. Carothers noted, “ I am happy with the girls that went, because we all worked well together.” He added that he enjoys road trips with students because it gives everyone a chance to really get to know each other. Baptist, who helped in dri ving and keeping a steady sense of humor within the group, sai^she gained a deeper appreciation for what Habitat does. She also noted. “Every one should devote one spring break to Habitat." Juniors, seniors celebrate last of school Leesha Austin Layout Editor Juniors and seniors gathered together for a time of relax ation and celebration Tuesday night, March 20 at 9 p.m. in Belk Dining Hall. The event entitled “The Midnight Snack" consisted of an assortment of desserts and games for the enjoyment of the juniors and seniors in atten dance, set against the decora tion of numerous colorful bal loons and candy-adorned tables. According to junior Amy Michael, co-chair of the event with junior Atyson Hardin, they chose to have the event later at night and serve desserts instead of doing a dinner because in the past, events scheduled around dinner haven’t worked as well. The tradition of junior/senior events began sev eral years ago. Last year, the class of 2001 donated the moi.'iy it wotjIJ have spent on the event to a charity of the senior class’ choice. “We want ed the event to be laid back and informal,” explained Michael. She added that they just wanted the event to be a nice time for everyone to relax and have fun. Those who attended the event were able to choose from a wide array of games includ ing Twister. Taboo, checkers and Candy Land. Junior Laney Brown said of the event, “It was a lot of fun getting together with both juniors and seniors fol- lowing spring break. The games were fun, and they were a nice break from school work, and the desserts were quite delicious.” _ Michael was how well the turnout, to promote class unity among both the classes, to have fun, and most importantly, to show the seniors that we are going to miss them.” she explained.
