Meredith Herald October 3, 2001 Campus News POET continued from page one of poetry that he said were a tribute to New York City. “! am going to read all my favorite poems that 1 normally would read,” Kinnell said to the audience, “but as a resident of New York City, I am espe cially sore at bean” about the collapse of the World Trade Center and the tragedy sur rounding the last few weeks. “I will include some poetry appropriate for the occasion,” he told the audience. Kinnell read a dark German poem called ‘Try to Praise the Mutilated World” which dis cussed personal acceptance of human destruction. . He al.so read a hum(HX>us and whimsical poem called “The Avenue Bearing the Initial of Christ into the New World.” which talked about familiar sounds, smells and details of New York City. Kinnell interacted with his audience throughout the read ing. He explained the personal meaning behind each poem before he read it. “Because of this, I felt more comfortable listeiiing to the poems, and 1 was able to really appreciate them,” said sopho more Dana Looney. Kresge Auditorium was lull before Kinnell began his read ing. Students and teachers who could not tlnd a seat sat on the steps or stood in the back of the room. Kinnell encouraged these people to come down front and sit on the stage before he began. When audience mem bers did proceed down the steps to sit on the stage around Kinnell, who was standing at a pxlium centerstage, it gave the auditorium a relaxed and inti mate feeling. Kinnell thought something else might be on the minds of the audience members now nestled around him. “I too have sometimes pre ferred to stand beside the exit at poetry readings,” he said. The reading was followed by a reception and a book signing. ~ A Lcodership Enrichment Series ‘Elhical Leadership Panel* will be held Wednesday Oct.
