Hooters uniforms,
police speculated.
Authorities raided the
building in February
and seized a computer
that held 180 digital
videos of women ages
17-25. The prospec

Meredith focuses on Medieval Studies

You have probably
heard about Meredith’s
attempt to get into the
Guinness Book of World
Records by reciting or
reading the prologue
from Geoffrey Chaucer's
■‘Canterbury Tales”.
Meredith students, fac
ulty, staff and alumnae
will gather in Mclver
Amphitheater at 6 p.m.,
rehearse at 6:30 and
begin the recitation at 7.
To coincide with this
event, and Meredith's
yearlong focus on
medieval studies,
Meredith Performs
will be presenting two
medieval one acts - “The
Brome Play of Abraham
and Isaac” and ‘The
Apple Tree”. The former
is a straightforward inter
pretation of the biblical
tale, while the latter is a
humorous, quirky story
about a couple that ask
God to help them protect
their most prized posses
sion, an apple tree.
Steven Roten, the
director, teaches acting
classes at Meredith.
These shows are his fifth
directorial project, but his
first at Meredith College.
To prepare, he referred to
many historical sources
on medieval costumes,
games and performances.
"I wanted the audience to
care about these charac
ters, and that is why I
decided to create the play
outside of the play," he
said.
To complement the
one acts, Mr. Roten cre
ated a back-story that
explains why the shows
are being performed. At
the top of the show; a
royal court, including
revelers, a herald and a
countess, arrive to see a
traveling troupe of actors
perform for them. The
countess chooses the
shows from their reper
toire, and then the actors
scurry to prepare. Steven
said, 'The most difficuh
part of this process has
been getting people to
realize the picture in my
head, but this final week
of rehearsal has been the
most rewarding.
Everything is starting to
come together."
The actors in the show
have been dealing with
their own concerns. The
show calls for authentici
ty, which is not always
easy when dealing with
period pieces.
"The hardest thing has
been memorizing the lan
guage," senior Emily
McLendon said, "the
