Student Expression at the 2014 DanceWorks
Fantasia Evans; staff Writer
DanceWorks was performed in the Jones
Auditorium Friday, April ii until Sunday, April 13.
Saturday and Sunday were split between programs
A and B of which showcased Meredith College danc
ers. Sunday was the Gala program which featured
specifically chosen dances from programs A and B.
The event seemed to be a success with Meredith stu
dents, staff, faculty, and community coming together
to experience and support Meredith College Danc
ers. The performances varied and were expressed in
many different types of dance. Each had meanings of
their own and was presenting some sort of message
through movement of was simply fun and exciting to
view.
The dances were choreographed and per
formed by Meredith College students and faculty.
One piece in particular that had a clear message in
tended for the audience was featured in Program A
choreographed by Junior Dance Education Major,
Megan Motley who stated, “My piece, “The Only
Way” was definitely inspired by my beliefs and ev
eryday life experiences and how I feel peace can be
brought to the world. It was inspired by Ephesians
4.” She as well as many of the other artists used life
experiences and ideas to be expressed and presented
through the movements of the dancers. Senior Dance
Studies Major Tequila Reid discussed her piece titled
“Words Attach, Never Reflect (Imperfections) as a
therapeutic process for her dancers. Reid’s dancers
wrote in notebooks how they felt about themselves
and created movements from these words. Reid then
choreographed the movements into a dance. Dance
Works was important for choreographers, dancers,
and audience alike to experience movement, mean
ing, and the importance of dance for all people. Even
if one wasn’t on stage at DanceWorks it was clear
to see the passion, thought, importance, and effort
shine through the dancers and their created works.
Library Party Movie Picks
Katy Koop, staff writer
Now that finals are here, the time
for procrastination has arrived more than
ever. Now with all the papers piling up
there’s ample time to do just anything
but that- There’s scrolling down tumblr
for five hours, making elaborate micro-
wave desserts, cleaning every inch of the
bathroom, and of course binge watching
movies and T.V. shows. Hefe are some
feel good picks from the Meredith Library
that might fill that need:
No.i Ladies Detective Agency: It is a
shame that this T.V. show only had one
season on HBO. It is the ultimate feel
good that a sad student can pop in the
dark time between 3 am and 5 am. It takes
the concept of a detective agency out of
cold male dominated London and takes it
to warm and colorful Botswana, with two
women solving crimes in their village be
cause they want to take justice into their
own hands, also with tea in hand. Wheth
er it is solving crimes about missing hus
bands, ivory smugglings or car jackings-
this show is sure to become everyone s
number one.
Chicago: Some nights need a little more
kareoke than most. Chicago is just the
movie for that- singing “He had it cornin’”
while writing an essay, “And we both
reached for the gun” while diagramming
note cards, “Give em’ the old razzle daz
zle” while putting the finishing touches
on that presentation and any Meredith
girl can feel like the star that Roxy wants
to be. There’s singing, dancing, and of
course murder- it is the perfect choice for
exam level catharsis.
Midnight in Paris: English Majors of
all people need to see this movie. Even
if not, even if just a person that loves the
twenties or the sass of Hemingway, or just
people that like to be happy- now is the
time for this movie. It is Woody Allen at
his feel best. Many critics have called his
movies love letters to different cities and
this movie is a love letter to Paris, to art
and Literature, and every depressed stu
dent writing a never ending paper. Pop
this movie in, get a pep talk from Heming
way and “if baby I’m the bottom, you’re
the top!”
