Editorials Looking Back: A Graduation Reflection Jenny Gerardo, staff writer Seventeen years ago, a five year old girl moved from Santana, a small Mexican town, to North Carolina. She left in tears and kept telling her parents to leave her with her grandpa. But, the little girl’s pleas did not work. She moved to the United States and started a new life. Soon after arriving she was enrolled into public school. At first the little girl struggled in school because she had no idea what the teachers or her classmates were saying. But, she quickly learned English and she started to enjoyed school. She loved going to school. By the second grade the little girl had set a goal for herself, she would go to college, graduate, and do something great with her life. On May third I will accomplish the goal that I set for myself when I was in second grade. Each day May 3 gets closer and closer and each day I thank my parents for not listening to their five year old daughter. I also thank them for sacrificing their lives for me. My parents moved to the US because they wanted a better live for their family and it is because of them that I have been able to at tend Meredith. If they would have done what I had asked to I would have gotten to start my journey. A journey that start the first day I step on Meredith’s campus. Over this past four years I have seen myself grow as a student, a professional and an individual. It was at Meredith that I found out that my passion for helping people could be a profession. It was the professors at Meredith that help me real ized how much potential I had. Meredith has provided me with so many oppor- “It was at Meredith that Ifound out that my passion for helping people could be a profession. But, I no longer fear whatis to come because it was here, at Meredith, that I learned the skills to be successful in life. The Meredith Herald congratulate its graduating seniors, Maitlyn Healy, Katy Koop, Jenny Gerardo and Caitlin Davis. Thank you for all of your hard work. So You’re Picking Ivy, Eh? Morgan Lloyd , contributing writer There is no doubt that Class Day is one of the most special traditions for the Bigs and Lils of the senior and sophomore classes. Picking ivy is hard work, but totally worth the beautiful daisy chains that line the amphitheater for the Class Day ceremony. Here are some fun ways to prepare for picking ivy with your class, sophomores: 1. Be sure you bring gloves to protect those manicures. 2. Wear long pants because you will inevitably be up to your knees in ivy. 3. Stretch before you find yourself squatting from 5-9 am. 4. Pick ivy in groups as you will find it is much more enjoyable when picking among many friends. 5. Finally, when you think you can’t pull another string of those pesky ivy leaves, just remember that it is all worth it because you have the best BIG sis ever! In my opinion, this is one of my fondest memories at Meredith to date. I stayed up all night to pick ivy for my big sis class. To say that 2015 was exhausted by the time we carried the chains into the amphitheater is an understatement, but we wouldn’t trade it for the world. We proudly presented the chain and cre ated an “11” in the center for our BIGS. As you prepare for your chance to pick ivy this year, keep these tips in mind and remember to have fun, 2016! It’s a tradition you will always remember. Happy summer vacation! Look for the Meredith Heraid in the fail. Meredith Hacks: Life Hacks for Avenging Angels!
