Not all Pine Knoll Shores residents come from places outside
Carteret County. Nettie Murrill, for one, was born just across the
Sound in Morehead City, and her parents lived on Shackleford Banks
when that now-deserted island was still inhabited. Nettie's father
ran the Sprigtail, the boat which Mrs. Hoffman who owned all our
community bought from him, William Murrill came from Onslow County
but has lived in this area for fifty years. Both he and Nettie
remember when there was no bridge to Bogue Banks and excursion
boats ran from Morehead City bringing vacationers to the pavilion
and bathhouse for a day at the beach. Nettie and William Murrill
built their home in Pine Knoll Shores in 1963, one of the first
homes in Pine Knoll Shores. Both of the Murrills can tell count
less stories about Bogue Banks, enough to fill a book.
YOU BELIEVE that PKS is a retirement community? That
everyone here had just turned 65? Some of us went to a baby shower
the other day over on Loblolly. We'd bet the ages ranged from 25 to
65 (nobody, of course, ever gets over 65 -- it's kind of like the
Jack Benny 39 syndrome.)
****'>XHE FIGHT AGAINST LITTERING goes on. One West Carteret
High School student who walks half a mile from the bus to her home
in PKS each afternoon has taken to picking up the empty bottles and
cans on her way. By the time she reaches her house, she smells like
a brewery and her books are almost toppling to the ground, but she
has brightened at least the way between Salter Path Road and her
garbage can. We've been picking up stuff on the beach, too. Anyone
have any ideas on how to deal with the litter mess?
RECENTLY MOVED IN RESIDENTS: The Emmersons on Loblolly and the
Youngbloods on White Ash. JUST MOVED: The Hallers whose new home
is built where Mrs. Hoffman's house once stood. Part of the founda
tion of her house is incorporated in their terrace.
We'll see you, we trust, at the PKS cocktail party on June 9th.
Meanwhile, send your gems, your good grey printables, to either Mary
Doll on White Ash, Route 1, Pine Knoll Shores, Morehead City, N. C.,
or Betty Hammon on Oakleaf, Route 1, Pine Knoll Shores, Morehead City
N. Co We'll take the blame for this initial printing, but we hope
the ones to follow will be filled with lots of everyone's thoughts.
We are currently compiling a list of all residents, including
addresses and phone numbers. In addition, we will send you a list of
non-residents as well. This list should accompany our next newsletter.
You non-residents, Yill hurry on down. It's a terrific new way
of life I
