Faye Newby, Board Member from the 11th District of N.C.Gaiden Clubs, talked to the February 23 meeting of the PIS Garden Club about house plants, their cultivation and care. She made a point which your Editor had never thought of — choose the place you want a plant first, and then choose a plant which will thrive in that loca» tion. Some^such as fruiting plants need sun, and others prefer shade or a cooler spot. And if you don’t know whether you are watering your plants too little or too much, she showed a device which will give you an instant meter reading of the degree of wetness on your plant. Mrs, Newby and her husband, Roger, have the Newport Gardes Center, On March 29 the Club is sponsoring a trip to the Orton Plantation and the Airlie Gardens, VIVIAN MacDONALD announced that ^8 have already signed up for the trip. Since only ^8 can be accommodated, there are very few places left, MARY KAY SMITH announced the Arbor Day planting March 9 at 10 A.M. Shrubs will be planted and stepping stones placed around the flagpole at the Town Hall, VERN WALLACE announced that members will distribute flyers and take orders for flags to be flown in PKS on National holidays. The plan is that residents should place these flags along the road at six foot intervals. Garden Club members may volunteer to help at the Coastal Resources Center in the following service areasj Library, Information Booth, Hospitality, Landscape Plant ing, and Tour Guides, Dr, Ned Smith told the group how much volunteers can contribute to the success of the Center, MARJ JOHNSON and MABEL HEMPHILL are working on a guideline booklet about the Center, NEW NEIGHBORS: FRAN and JOE DWYER are renting on Walnut Circle while their house is being built (also on Walnut Circle), Most recently they lived in Illinois, but they say they lived longest in Bergen County, New Jersey and look on that as their real home, at least until they found Pine Knoll Shores, They have two daughters and two grandsons. And living with them is their gentle friendly Dalmation, Smokey, Joe was with Metropolitan Life in their real estate investment division. He likes golf and fishing, Fran plays bridge and paints a little but insists that she is a very amateur artist. Another new family — Perhaps you’ve noticed the pretty pink azalea blooming before its time on Yaupon Drive, Well, that’s to annoiince the arrival, on February 9, of a new citizen — a darling little baby girl - 6 lbs,, oz - to LYNN and CHARLES LUPTON, Ms, Carlyn Frances Lupton has her own identity - "Carl" from Grandpa Carl, '’Lynn" from her Mother and "Frances” from her Grandmother, She joins a big North Carolina family and is very relaxed in this very attractive home, Charles works at GKerry Point for NARF, but that’s just the beginning. His yard is spotless and the drive a soft cushion of pine needles. He has been known to mow neighbors’ yards and the right-of-way along Yaupon just for the fun of it, Lynn and Charles take plastic bags along on bike rides, the better to gather up other peoples' trash, lAke the rest of us, they deplore the local custom of littering. Do notice their original, yellow, t^ndpainted mail box. That’s only a preview. Inside, their home IS most cheerful, colorful and expertly decorated. The Luptons would like to meet more young couples and it is a pleasure for older couples to meet them, "N.H." nave you noticed the Sold sign on the former JORDAN house on Oakleaf in the Golf Course section? It has been purchased by LUCY and BILL (W.L.) SMITH of Winston. Some of our readers may already know them and their Australian Silky Terrier, Muffin, because they have had a home on Bay view Boul-evard in Atlantic Beach, We hope they will be spending lots of time in PKS, ileed wood for your fireplace? RAY SCOGGINS will be glad to tell you where trees have been taken down which you can cut for wood. However, as Ray points out, is only fair that wood be cut and moved at the builder’s and owner’s convenience, not yours^
