April 2, May 7; 10 a.m. Meet at the visitor center to learn about the wide range of flags used by the Confederacy during the Civil War. Future dates: June 4, July 2, August 6, September 3, October 1, November 5, December 3. Art Opening and Jazz Concert. April 6 at St. Francis by the Sea Episcopal Church in Salter Path. The art opening (free) featuring the work of Anne Cowie and her students begins at 5:30 p.m. and the jazz concert featuring Grenoldo Frazier (tickets $25) begins at 6:30, and is followed by a reception. Tickets may be purchased at the church office, at First Citizens Bank in Atlantic Beach or at the door on the night of the performance. Calidore Quartet returns by popular demand, performing works by Tchaikovsky, Janacek, Beethoven and Shaw. Cannon firing demonstrations at 10:30,11:30,1:30, 2:30, and 3:30. Future date: May 26. PKS Resiliency Evaluation and Needs Assessment Workshop. April 7,10 a.m.-noon, at the Pine Knoll Shores town hall, 100 Municipal Circle. Sponsored by the Town of Pine Knoll Shores and the NC Division of Coastal Management, this workshop will include discussions of hazard-related issues participants have experienced, town assets and identification of flood prone areas through a mapping session. Fort Macon Musket Firing Demonstration. April 4, 11,18, 25; 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Learn about a Civil War-era muskets history, loading procedures and firing. Meet at the fort. Future dates: May 2, 9, 16, 23, 27. Fort Macon Bird Hike. April 9, 9 a.m. Meet at the visitor center and take a leisurely hike to identify birds native to the area. Future date: May 14. Annual Spring Shred-a-Thon Hosted by Atlantic Wealth Management. April 12, noon-2 p.m. at 712 Bridges Street in Morehead City. Members of the communiity are invited to bring a maximum of five boxes or bags of paper documents for free shredding. Staples, paper clips and thin folders can be shredded along with your documents; no three-ring binders, please. A shred truck will be on-site, and there will be refreshments to enjoy. Carteret Community College International Film Series 2018. Films 5:20 and 7:30 p.m.; dinner by Floyds 1921 available at 6 p.m. and inspired by the featured films country. Livingston Taylor Performs in New Bern. April 12 at the New Bern Riverfront Convention Center, with the opening act, locals Lewis n Clark, beginning the evening at 7 p.m. Taylor’s career includes performance, songwriting and teaching, and he has shared the stage with major artists such as Joni Mitchell, Linda Ronstadt, Fleetwood Mac, Jimmy Buffet and Jethro Tull. NASA/JSP (Jump Start Program) Solar System Ambassador Lisa Pelletier-Harman will speak on NASA’s Hubble Telescope. Come’learn how it has changed our understanding of the universe, some of the mission’s highlights and more. Girls Exploring Science & Technology (GEST). April 14, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Duke Marine Lab in Beaufort. All girls in 6th-8th grades are invited to attend a free day of hands-on science and technology activities led by local researchers. Registration is available at sites.duke.edu/gest. Trinity Center Open House. April 15, 2-4 p.m., 618 Salter Path Road in Pine Knoll Shores. Come learn about what Trinity Center has to offer. A Friends of Trinity presentation will be at 4 p.m. in the Beach House, followed by a picnic dinner, on the Pavilion. Free and open to the public. Coastal Antiques and Collectibles Club. April 18. The April meeting of the club will begin at 11:30 a.m. at Floyd’s 1921 Restaurant at 400 Bridges Street in Morehead City. Herb Prytherch will present an interesting program on sea shells. After the program, we will have a Dutch treat lunch and meeting. Visitors are always welcome. Our May meeting is being planned as a trip to New Bern. Natural Side of Fort Macon Hike. April 19, 10 a.m. Meet at the visitor center. The hike will cover both trail and beach. Future dates: May 17, 31. Statewide Star Party: Fort Macon. April 20 (rain date April 21), 7 p.m. Join the Crystal Coast Star Gazers for the 2018 Statewide Star Party. Several telescopes will be set up, and related activities are planned. Meet at the bathhouse parking lot. Crystal Coast Earth Day. April 21, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Celebrate Earth Day with over a dozen local organizations at Fort Macon State Park. Each group will have a booth with displays and/or activities showcasing their group’s conservation efforts. Living History Weekend at Fort Macon. April 21-22,10 a.m.-4 p.m. xvjenactors with the 1st NC Volunteers will present special living history events and programs. A skirmish scenario will take place at 1:30 p.m. each day. Future event: July 21-22, September 22-23. Carteret Big Sweep Earth Day Cleanup. April 22, noon-2 p.m. at the Newport River Boat Ramp on Radio Island (301 Hwy. 70). Join area organizations and universities for a beach cleanup and Hope Spot Hatteras awareness event. (Hope Spots are areas in the ocean that are important for life in the ocean.)
