Ancient Mariners Bowling League By Bill Dorsett Upcoming 2018-2019 season The Ancient Mariners Bowling League will begin its 45th year of bowling in September. Participation in the league is principally for “senior” residents of Pine Knoll Shores, Atlantic Beach, Morehead City and surrounding towns. We are very excited this year as this will represent the third year we will bowl with an expanded league of 12 four-person teams, compared to 12 three-person teams in the past. We also have a list of approximately 25 substitute bowlers who fill in for regular members who may be absent on any given day. At the end of last season, a poll was taken, and it appears nearly all of our full-time members and subs will return this coming year. This group plans to maintain the rich tradition of the league, which is focused on fun and fellowship, rather that strict competition. We bowl 12 Mondays in the fall, and 12 Mondays in the spring at 1p.m. at MacDaddy s in Cape Carteret. We normally start the season the fourth week in September, and conclude the fourth week in March. The league is open to all citizens, typically 50 years of age and older—and skill levels are simply not important. We are a non-sanctioned league, but do maintain team and individual scores, with an end-of-year “roll-off” to determine the season championship team and several individual achievements. Awards are given out at a banquet held shortly after the conclusion of the season in late March. League officers for the upcoming season remain the same as last year: Mike Bednarz, president; Carolyn and Bob Slater, vice presidents; Bill Dorsett, secretary; and Bill Knecht, treasurer. New members for the upcoming season are welcome and can contact Mike Bednarz (773-0443) or Bill Dorsett (622-4821) for more information. Since virtually all of our regular members have indicated they will return this season, it may be necessary to form a waiting list—or new individuals can join as substitute bowlers until a full-time slot opens. The Country Club of the Crystal Coast ...where friends connect By John Ferguson We certainly had the rain in July and the first part of August. While we were all ready to see some extended periods of sunshine, the rain was a big help in the clubs effort to get the golf course back in shape. As has been communicated over the last couple of months, the cold weather last winter adversely affected the course, and a significant refurbishment effort was required for some of the greens and fairways. The abundance of rain and heat, along with the hard work of Andy Ipock and his staff of golf course maintenance folks, have brought the greens back to the point where they will be the best they have looked in quite some time. It is our hope that the full 18 holes will be open by the time this article is published. The tennis facility is in full swing and has been all summer. Those of you who are tennis players should come out and enjoy playing on these premier courts. I think you will be impressed at the quality of the facility, but even more important, you will have a great time meeting new friends and competitors. We have one of the best (if not the best) venues for events anywhere around. The view of the sound is so beautiful that weddings and parties cannot be in a better setting. If you are having a party, wedding or some other important event, please consider our location. You will find the service and the pricing very competitive, and we will certainly provide you with something to brag about. As you know. The Country Club of the Crystal Coast Board of Directors provides an article in The Shoreline each month to discuss what is happening at the club. This has been a great tradition in that the club and the Town of Pine Knoll Shores work closely to ensure our quality of life is maintained at a high standard for our community. The Shoreline is a means to keep this bond between the two very strong, and is a way to keep the towns population informed as to what is taking place in the town, as well as to provide information about the events at the club. I assure you that this publication could not be possible without the hard work and dedication of the Shoreline staff. I have had the opportunity to work with Janie Price in writing this article since the beginning of this year. She has shown herself to be a competent editor, and her advice and counsel have assisted me in preparing my comments each month. When there is improvement to be made, she is clear and supportive. Janie and the Shoreline staff are true assets to Pine Knoll Shores and the communication that assists in keeping the culture of this town at the forefront. You should know that on September 12 at the Board of Commissioners meeting Janie and the staff of The Shoreline will be honored for their dedication and professionalism. This is a well-deserved honor, and you might want to consider coming out to support them. I hope you are enjoying your summer. As it draws to a close, please know that The Country Club of the Crystal Coast is a place where you can meet new friends and enjoy the company of established relationships. Please join us.
