FROM THE DESK OF THE EDITOR Have You Heard ... ? Carteret Literacy Council needs tutors. Changing lives by improving the reading and math skills of adult residents of Carteret County is the mission of the Carteret Literacy Council. Unlocking the students world by learning to read—and reading to learn—is achieved by volunteer tutors who dedicate four hours a week to working with them. Students come from all walks of life, including those who wish to learn English as a second language (ESL) and become productive citizens. All have different goals and desired outcomes and are placed with a tutor trained to meet their needs. All teaching materials such as dictionaries, workbooks, citi zenship books and phonics software are provided free of charge and become the property of the student. Learn how to share your love for reading with others by being a volunteer tutor. The Carteret Literacy Council provides the training you need to be certified as a tutor to those who need assistance to improve their skills. A few hours of your time can lead to a lifetime of fulfillment for someone else. The next 12-hour tutor training workshop is scheduled for 5-8 p.m. on Tuesday, September 18; Thursday, September 20; Tuesday, September 25; and Thursday, September 27. Tutors must attend all four sessions. If you are interested in help ing someone with the gift of reading, call 808-2020 or email carteretliteracy@ carteretliteracy.org to register for the classes. A $20 registration fee is requested to cover cost of materials. Carteret Community College offers free GIS class. Experts will admit that it is difficult to get a simple definition of a Geographic Information System (GIS). It may be explained as being a computer-based mapping/geographical data manage ment tool used to capture, store, manipulate, analyze, manage, and present all types of geographical data. Lets try that again. A GIS lets us visualize, question, analyze, interpret and understand data—and you’re already using it whether you know it or not. Have you ever searched for a restaurant or coffee shop on your smart phone and followed the directions there? That’s GIS. When you spot a friend’s vacation selfie on Facebook and see exactly where he or she is having dinner, that’s GIS. It also figures in when emergency services provide help in the event of natural disasters or emergencies. Carteret Community College is offering an opportunity to learn to use it locally to navigate the Carteret County GIS website—and it’s free. County residents are invited to learn to navigate the county’s GIS website by query, parcel, address or sales search. The only prerequisite for the class is basic computer knowledge. The class is offered on Saturday, September 15, 9 a.m.-noon or Saturday, October 20, 9 a.m.-noon. Both classes are held in the Wayne West Building, Room 319. Register in person at the college or online by visiting carteret.edu and following these links: Continuing Education, Class Listings, Life Enrichment, Navigating the Carteret County GIS Website, Pre-Registration. Don’t miss this chance to wow your grandchildren. Call the college at 222-6000 if you have questions. Caribbean cruise planned by the Leon Mann Jr. Enrichment Center.
