Third Annual PKS Pickleball Tournament Recreational and fun pickleball tournament The Pine Knoll Shores Parks and Recreation Committee will host the towns third annual mixed doubles Recreational and Fun Pickleball Tournament on September 22 (rain date September 23). There will be four pickleball courts for the competition located on Pine Knoll Boulevard near town hall. The Pine Knoll Shores Police Department will block off a section of the street from Live Oak Court to Fern Court for this purpose. Drivers will be able to access Pine Knoll Boulevard north of Live Oak Court via Arborvitae Drive beginning at 5 p.m. on the day before the tournament. The street will reopen after the tournament and cleanup are complete at approximately 6 p.m. on tournament day. The tournament will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., with registration beginning at 8:30. Competition is open to all skill levels, with a limit of 24 players. Advance reservation is required and may be made by contacting Connie Brophy at BrophyConnie@gmail.com or 247-5598 by September 8. Players should provide a rating of their skill level when they register. Registrants are welcome to sign up as a partnership, but an attempt will be made to pair those who do not have a partner with another player. Registration is $15 per player, and registered players will receive a hot dog lunch. Spectators will be able to purchase lunch at the tournament. Attendees should bring their own lawn chairs. Attendees at the tournament can park at Lot C by the public safety building or in one of two sections available on Pine Knoll Boulevard. Park diagonally on the grass edge of Pine Knoll Boulevard between Highway 58 and Live Oak Court or access the north end of Pine Knoll Boulevard via Arborvitae Drive and park diagonally on the grass edge of the road between Ramsey Drive and Fern Court. There are four outdoor pickleball courts in Pine Knoll Shores—three behind town hall and one at Garner Park. The courts are available for anyone to use (children under the age of 16 should be accompanied by an adult), and the nets are stored in a locked deck box behind town hall. Just come to town hall and ask for the combination that opens the lock. Weather permitting, on most weekends players can be found on the courts at town hall around 9 a.m. on Saturday (and sometimes on Sunday). Contact Jerry Price atjerryaprice@gmail.com for questions about weekend play or to get on the Pine Knoll Shores pickleball email list. PKA News By Alicia Kramer Durham As the busy summer season is winding down, it is time to thank all the Pine Knoll Association (PKA) volunteers and residents for doing their part in maintaining our parks and public spaces. A special thank you is also extended to all PKA residents who volunteered this summer for Ocean Park flag duty. Each day a volunteer raises the flags, sweeps and blows the walkways, picks up trash, refills dog bag dispensers, switches full trash/recycle bins with empty ones and places all full trash/recycle bins outside the park gate on trash day. An additional thank you goes to the volunteers who watch and maintain our marinas, including getting the trash cans to the curb. It takes a village—a PKA village. Although we would love more volunteers, you do not have to conimit a week to flag duty to do your part. Visit pineknollassociation.com to sign up. Even without officially signing up, you can help in the following ways: • Do not leave items on the beach overnight. • Put all trash in the appropriate trash cans, including some that is not yours. • Take large trash items, such as broken beach chairs and umbrellas, to the town bins located behind town hall or at Lot C adjacent to the public safety building. • Stuff" the recycle bins with recyclable items such as cleaned plastic and aluminum cans. No plastic bags, please. • Call PKA at 252-240-1717 if you see anything in disrepair or broken. This includes boats at the marina that may be sinking. • When you see someone raising a flag, sweeping the steps or taking out the trash, say thank you. Don’t forget to check out PKA’s new swing set and monkey bars at Hall Haven and Brock Basin. If you have other recreation equipment ideas or ways to improve our parks, please comment on PKA’s Facebook page (Pine Knoll Association) or send an email to pkabox905@gmail.com. PKA contact. Contact PKA by phone at 252-240-1717, by email at PKAbox905@ gmail.com, via the PKA website at pineknollassociation.com or by mail at PO Box 905, Atlantic Beach, NC 28512.
