The Library Reopening and closings. The Bogue Banks Public Library reopened on Tuesday, October 16, after having closed on September 11 for Hurricane Florence and remaining closed because of air quality impacts from the storm. “It was like being in a room where sheetrock was being sanded,” commented Donna Freernan, Adult Services Librarian. After the air in the library was tested, professional air cleaning equipment was installed, operating for several days. Overdue fines will be waived for the days the library was closed. The library will be closed on November 12 for Veterans Day and on November 22-23 for Thanksgiving. Book Nook. The Book Nook, operated by the Friends of Bogue Banks Library, remains closed and donations of materials cannot be accepted at this time. The Nook received significant rainwater intrusion; all the books and shelves are relocated until the Nook can be sanitized and the carpeting replaced. There is no time frame for reopening, but “people should watch for our Grand Reopening Party,” says Barbara McCreary, pre’sklent of the group. Activities for children. Preschool Storytime for ages 3-5 is held each Thursday at 10 a.m. with Ms. Brita. • Thursday, November 1, will be “Save a Turkey: Feast on Books.” • Thursday, November 8, will be “Bird is the Word.” • Thursday, November 15, will be “Thankful and Grateful.” • Thursday, November 22, the library will be closed. • Thursday, November 29, will be “Stuffed!” Featured artwork. In the library’s art gallery in November will be photography by Doug Waters. Doug’s interest in photography began with his love of surfing. He began surfing at an early age and moved to Hawaii after high school. Living in Hawaii, he watched some of the world’s greatest surf photographers getting the opportunity to film some of the world’s best waves—and that is when Doug purchased his first camera and was bitten by the photo bug. As time went on, his photographs were being recognized by the surfing magazines, highlighting the talents of surfers on the east coast, particularly North Carolina and Florida. He eventually became a senior staff photographer at Surfing Magazine. He was inducted into the East Coast Surfing Hall of Fame in the media division in 2010. His photographs appear in the Coastal Review Online, the website for the NC Coastal Federation, EarthSky.org and our local astronomy club, CCGazers.com (Crystal Coast Stargazers). Doug’s photograph of close friend Buddy Pelletier is used on the NC specialty plate for the Buddy Pelletier Surf Foundation. Doug resides in Morehead City, enjoying photographing the beauty around us, our night sky and, as always, waves. The library’s showcase will feature carvings by George Brooks. The carvings of shorebirds, herons, dolphins, and a dock are crafted in a variety of woods, some familiar (like walnut and teak) and some exotic (zebra wood from Africa). There is no artist reception in November. f- EXPRESS PLUMBING • Service • Remodeling • Water Heaters Replacement & Repairs • Garbage Disposals • Faucets • Toilets • Well Pumps “ Sewer & Drain Cleaning Service smviCEm.
