Flags of Fort Macon and the Confederacy. November 5, December 3; 10 a.m. Meet at the visitor center to learn about the wide range of flags used by the Confederacy during the Civil War. Fort Macon Musket Firing Demonstration. November 7, 14,21, 28; December 5, 12, 19; 10 a.m. Learn about a Civil War-era muskets history, loading procedures and firing. Meet at the fort. Friday Free Flick. November 9, 7 p.m. at the Emerald Isle Community Center. Movies are family oriented. Free and open to the public; children must be accompanied by an adult. Caviar Farm Tour and Tasting. November 10, December 8; 10:30 a.m.-noon. Marshallberg Farm, 811 Straits Road in Smyrna, is the largest producer of Russian sturgeon caviar in the country, with the capacity to produce up to three tons of caviar per year. Due to popular demand, the Down East facility will be holding a series of tours and tastings. Following the guided walk among 40 indoor recirculating aquaculture taiiks that teem with sturgeon and span 54,000 square feet of building space, there will be a caviar and smoked sturgeon tasting and a chance to purchase products. Exploring the Heavens. November 10, 2 p.m. at the Fort Macon Visitor Center’s large auditorium. NASA/JSP (Jump Start Program) Solar System Ambassador Lisa Pelletier-Harman will share an overview of the first non-terrestrial telescope, NASA’s Hubble. Learn how it has changed our understanding of the universe, some of the mission’s highlights, and be introduced to the next step in observing’s evolution, the James Webb Telescope. Future date: December 8. Feasting in Rivendell. November 10, 7 p.m.-9:30 p.m., at the Infusion Cafe, 1012 Arendell Street in Morehead City. This 7th annual Tolkien feast, based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit, features three courses of elvish fare and two courses of fine infusions as guests step into a world of fantasy and magic while Middle Earth Comes to life around them. Characters in attendance include Gandolph the Grey, Thorin Oakenshield, Lord Elrond and Bilbo Baggins. Seating is limited and tickets are required. November 10, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. A handful of living history historians will be at Fort Macon to talk with the public about life in the fort during different times of its history. Periods covered may include: WWII, the War Between the States, the Mexican-American War, and possibly others. Mistletoe Magic Holiday Gift Show. November 10, 9 a.m.-4 p.m., at the Crystal Coast Civic Center. Browse the aisles for decorations, entertainment ideas, children’s gifts and clothing, jewelry, wood art, pottery, holiday crafts and many more one-of-a-kind items. Admission is $4 per person, and children 12 and under are free. Fresh homemade goodies wiU be available for purchase. Fort Macon Bird Hike. November 12, 24; 9 a.m. Meet at the visitor center and take a leisurely hike to identify birds native to the area. Future date: December 10. Natural Side of Fort Macon Hike. November 15,10 a.m. Meet at the visitor center. The hike will cover both trail and beach. Future date: December 20. An Evening for Broad Street. November 17, 6-8 p.m., at the Crystal Coast Civic Center. In this encore performance of “A Tribute to the Ladies of Song,” Jeanne Jolly will perform such greats as Ella Fitzgerald, Etta James, Aretha Franklin and more, as well as a few holiday favorites to ring in the holiday season. Call 726-4562 for ticket information. Jonkonnu Symposium. November 17 at the NC History Center, adjacent to the Governor’s Palace, in historic New Bern. Tryon Palace hosts Jonkonnu Symposium: Enslaved Lives, Traditions, and Cultures in the Americas, which explores the origins of Jonkonnu, a Christmastime activity that holds a historic importance for African American history. Attendees wiU learn from leading experts in Jonkonnu and African American culture and experience Jonkonnu firsthand through live performances with the Tryon Palace Jonkonnu Troupe. November 18, 11:30 a.m.-l p.m., at the Beaufort Historic Site at 130 Turner Street. A traditional turkey dinner is provided by some of the area’s finest restaurants; take out or enjoy it under the tent. Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 the day of the event. Call 728-5225 for more information. Pine Knoll Shores Thanksgiving Day Turkey Trot. November 22, 9-11 a.m., at McNeill Park on Oakleaf Drive. The Thankgiving Day celebration is free and open to all community members. Come out and work out in preparation for the feast later in the day. Coffee, donuts and hot chocolate will be provided at the end of the Turkey Trot to celebrate. The event will occur rain or shine. Small Business Saturday/Art Walk. November 24, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., downtown Morehead City. Support local businesses and artists for Small Business Saturday and the Art Walk sponsored by the Carteret County Arts Council. Check off items on your holiday shopping list while you view artwork at various downtown locations.-Call 808-0440 for more information. The Coastal Antiques and Collectibles Club. November 28, 11:30 a.m., at Clawson’s 1905 Restaurant in Beaufort. Club secretary Anne Landin will discuss “Handwoven Treasures.” Anne has been weaving sincelhe early ’80s and will bring samples of her work as well as antique coverlets and other pieces, primarily handwoven table linens that she has collected over the years. She will also explain how weaving patterns are designed, written and executed. A Dutch-treat lunch will follow the presentation. Visitors are welcome. Core Sound Waterfowl Weekend. November 30-December 2, 1785 Island Road, Markers Island. One of the most anticipated Core Sound events. Come for a weekend dedicated to celebrating Down East history, traditions and community spirit. The weekend will kick off Friday night with a ticketed preview party, followed by two days of wildlife artists, decoy carvers and collectors, model boat builders and other crafters selling their wares, plus boat building, oar making, and retriever demonstrations, local seafood, children’s activities, and much more.
