PINE KNOLL SHORES GARDEN CLUB By jean McDanal On Wednesday, October 10, members of the Pine Knoll Shores Garden Club, ablaze with neon yellow and orange vests, worked a total of 46 woman hours in the Pine Knoll Shores gardens. The worker bees first swarmed Oakleaf garden, weeding, deadheading, and cutting back errant growth as well as picking up trash. Following Oakleaf, we headed over to the Mimosa and Dogwood gardens to do the same. Members ended their work day by attacking the gardens at Pine Knoll Boulevard. The work day had originally been scheduled for November, but it was decided that with the visit of Hurricane Florence, the beds needed some TLC. All in all, the gardens fared well. Following the work activities, members were provided a nice lunch at town hall, and our business meeting commenced. The Garden Club moved its fall workday to October to facilitate cleanup In the town gardens after the hurricanes. A portion of the 26 club members who came out for the workday are pictured here, left to right: Sandy English, Martha Edwards, Michelle Powers, llene Karlsson, Jean McDanal, Lisa Park, Linda Pearson, Jo McGovern, Donna Belanger, Jan Corselio, Linda Langheld and Barb Yankauskas.—p/ioio by Susan King President Susan King welcomed back members, old and new, to what was our first meeting of the year. Our theme is “Butterflies, Birds and Pollinators,” which will be a major focus for us this year. The yearbook was distributed by Barbara Yankauskas, who did a fabulous job of putting this together for us. Susan reported that she and Jean McDanal attended the state meeting, “A Garden Party,” in Fayetteville on September 10. National Garden Club President Nancy Hargroves gave a presentation of ways to decorate outside. First Vice President JoAnn Shallcross mentioned that since we switched our meetings for October and November, our next meeting will be hands-on demonstrations and creations of ornaments, terra cotta pots, oyster shell art, wreath bows and block Christmas trees. Our December meeting is our Christmas gala, and January will be an evening program with Bill Flexman giving a presentation on birds found around Pine Knoll Shores. 22 The Shoreline I November 2018 '4i , ■ .
