Coastal Antiques and Collectibles Club in its 33rd Year The Carteret County Antiques and Collectibles Club was established 32 years ago on March 26, 1986, when 12 students enrolled in a course on antiques sponsored by Carteret Community College met to start an antiques and collectibles club. Instructor Jean Bruyere Kell—a well-known antiquarian, local dealer, historical researcher, preservationist, author and editor—was instrumental in helping the group get organized. Club members wanted a way to continue expanding their knowledge of antiques and sharing new information. The monthly lunchtime meetings provided an opportunity to interact socially in a relaxed environment while learning more about numerous related subjects. Field trips to museums, historic sites and antique shops were scheduled, in addition to trips to see extensive collections. A few programs from last year featured seashells, quilts, bottles, vintage jewelry and a trip to Foscue Plantation in Pollocksville. The name was changed recently to Coastal Antiques and Collectibles Club to be more inclusive of the area. We have members from Atlantic Beach, Beaufort, Emerald Isle, Jacksonville, Morehead City, New Bern, Newport, Pine Knoll Shores, Smyrna, Swansboro, and Crewe, Virginia. The Antiques and Collectibles Club meets monthly on the third Wednesday (except June through August when we break for the summer) at 11:30 a.m. at Clawsons 1905 Restaurant in Beaufort. A speaker is featured, followed by lunch and a business meeting. Meeting information can be found in most newspapers around Carteret, Craven and Onslow counties. Please visit a meeting; visitors are welcome. Our meeting on November 28 will feature club secretary Anne Landin discussing “Handwoven Treasures.” Anne has been weaving since the early ’80s and will bring samples of her work as well as antique coverlets and other pieces, primarily handwoven table linens that she has collected over the years. She will also explain how weaving patterns are designed, written and executed. A Dutch-treat lunch will follow the presentation. Visitors are welcome.
