American Music Festival By Linda Seale On March 9, American Music Festival will feature Caroline Shaw and the Jasper Quartet in concert, which was rescheduled after being cancelled due to Hurricane Florence. Ms. Shaw hails from Eastern North Carolina and has made a name for herself as a vocalist, violin/violist and composer. She has astonished both the pop and classical music worlds with her work and enjoys residencies with the Guggenheim, Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The Jasper String Quartet will join her to present her work, as well as the Brahms Viola Quintet. The final concert of the season will be April 13, featuring the Vera Quartet, artists in residence at Indiana University and comprised of young artists from Spain and Cuba. They have won the Plowman and Yellow Springs Chamber Music Competitions, and their program offers performances of Turina, de Falla and Ginastera, works which launched them into the US and European spotlight. We bring you an international assembly of artists whose passion speaks to the heart, which is what makes American Music Eestival concerts unforgettable. You cannot hear music like this without going to Raleigh, Washington or New York. Concerts are held on Saturdays at 8 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Morehead City. Concert tickets are $32, which covers the NC entertainment tax and mailing fees. For more information, contact Linda Seale at 726-0478. Vision and Mission Statements Our vision is to provide a quality environment in which all residents and visitors are safe and secure, where indiyidual talents flourish and everyone enjoys the natural resources of our area. It is the mission of the town of Pine Knoll Shores to provide for the safety and well-being of all residents and visitors in an efficient and well- organized manner; develop and implement plans for the continuous improvement of the town, its services and its beach; and encourage the participation of residents in service to the town and community. The Shoreline I March 2019 PKA News By Carolyn Brown Thompson Celebrating spring and volunteerism Good news—spring is well on its way with the promise of trees budding, flowers blooming, birds singing and ample opportunities to get involved with your Pine Knoll Association (PKA). Volunteers are sorely needed for a wide range of projects, one of which includes serving as a member of the PKA Board of Directors. Three openings will be available in June, and what better way to get involved, stay informed and make a difference in your community. A PKA director’s term is three years, and meetings, which most often end within an hour, are the second Monday of each month. Jobs include officers and committee chairpersons of parks, waterways, communication and publicity (social media, webmaster), architectural control, covenants, a local government advocate, and parliamentarian. The time commitment is flexible, with more activity required in the spring preparing for the annual meeting and readying our parks and marinas for spring and summertime activities. Those interested in being considered for the board should prepare a brief summary of their background and interests and forward to John Clarke at PKAbox905@gmail.com by March 30. The 2019 annual meeting is scheduled for Priday, June 21, at town hall, beginning with a social at 6:30 p.m., and followed by a business meeting at 7 o’clock. All PKA residents are encouraged to attend and will be actively involved in selecting the new directors for the board and approving other pertinent business as needed. As the weather improves, boat activity will increase in our canals. Let’s all be reminded that our canals are no wake zones. If there is a wake, you are driving too fast. If that happens, slow down, and let’s all stay safe out there. PKA contact. Third Annual PKS Pickleball Tournament Recreational and Fun Pickleball Tournament returns The Pine Knoll Shores Parks and Recreation Committee and The Country Club of the Crystal Coast will host the town’s third annual mixed doubles Recreational and Fun Pickleball Tournament on April 27 (rain date April 28). The tournament will be held at the clubs tennis center, where four pickleball courts will be set up on the Har- Tru-clay courts. Players must wear approved court shoes to play in the tournament. Touriiament play will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., with check-in beginning at 8:30. Competition is open to all skill levels, with a limit of 24 players. Advance registration is required by April 6; those interested in playing should contact Natalie Gibble at ngibble@towhofpks.com or 247-2268. Participants are welcome to sign up as a partnership, but an attempt will be made to pair players who do not have a partner. Registration is $25 per player (also due by April 6), and registered players will receiye a hot dog lunch. Spectators will be able to purchase lunch at the tournament. Due to limited seating, players and spectators should bring folding chairs. Volunteers are needed to help with the tournament, and there are jobs for those who are not familiar with pickleball play. Those interested in helping should contact Jerry Price atjerryaprice@gmail.com. Pickleball is gaining in popularity, and attending the tournament is a good way to see what it’s all about.
