PKA News By Carolyn Brown Thompson Hie Pine Knoll Association (PKA) annual meeting was held in June, resulting in the unanimous approval of the annual budget and in the election of three new directors to the Board of Directors: Jim Yankauskas, Bennett Wall and Barry Nash. Each will serve a three-year term. Those rotating off the Board were Amry Cox, Shannon Smylie and John Tilyard. Their service was much appreciated. Following the meeting, the directors met to elect officers for 2019-2020: John Clarke, president; Jim Yankauskas, vice president; Paula Stadiem, secretary; and Joe Murphy, treasurer. Congratulations to all, and best wishes for a productive year. There is good news for Ramsey Park and all those who enjoy it. Some much-needed work will begin soon to address hurricane damages, including replacement of the concrete pad, erection of a new basketball goal and tether ball set and the addition of four benches along the perimeter of the park. When finished, the park will be quite nice and as good as new. All it will need is you. In additional park news, a new kayak launcher has been installed at Hall Haven, and new racks are under construction. Remaining storm damage has been cleaned up at the Brock Basin park area, including grinding stumps and clearing of underbrush. In addition to the above improvements, old or weak dock boards are being replaced in our marinas. Residents are reminded that it is ill-advised to swim in or around our marinas because of concerns about electric currents that can cause injury and could be lethal. Our board does all that we can to ensure there are no problems, but accidents can happen, and we ask you not to swim around the docks. We have had reports from residents of occasional problems with gate cards in accessing the marinas or beach. Should this occur, please phone the harbormaster, Dick Belanger, for assistance at 252-646-3762. He, or his designee, will address the problem and will help you get where you want to go. The “Absolutely No Wake” signs are in place in the canals and seem to be helping, evidenced by the reduced number of complaints of speeding boats. Let s keep it up by remembering to make absolutely no wake when driving our boats in the canals and in the nearby waterways while entering and leaving the canals. Remember to join your neighbors at the sittum the first Sunday of each month at 5:30 p.m. for some fun and fellowship. Bring a beverage, have some conversation and enjoy the view. It is guaranteed to be a great, relaxing evening. PKA contact. Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Update (Continued from page 3) importance of bicycle helmets, relevant laws for pedestrians and drivers, and what we can do as a community and police department to make Pine KnoU Shores safer for everyone. I made the same presentation in April for the Emerald Isle Police Department, and their citizens turned out in force to learn what they can do to increase safety. The Beaufort Police Department has joined us and is now part of the Watch for Me NC program. I am extremely proud that Pine Knoll Shores is the leader in promoting pedestrian and bicycle safety in Carteret County. The word is out on what we are doing in Pine Knoll Shores, and others are following our model. We will be getting several hundred more reflective wrist and arm bands from the Watch for Me NC program in the coming weeks. Look for a post on our Facebook page when they come in if you are interested in picking some up. They are free and are a great way to alert drivers that you are walking/running/biking in our community.
