Eastland - Editor Lenora Roberson, Associate Editor FULL HOUSE HEARS The Board of Commissioners met a full house of Pine Knoll Shores citizens when it convened its monthly meeting at Town Hall on OF TAX REVALUATION Tuesday, February 3* Mayor Cleveland opened the meeting by read ing a resolution in memory of Commissioner El Ratliffe, who passed away suddenly on Sunday, February 1. The resolution was an expression of appreciation for his "outstanding and exemplary public service to the community of Pine Knoll Shores after moving to the town in 1976 • • • as a member of the Community Appearance Commis-» sion , Civil Preparedness Organization, Planning Board, and Board of Commissioners serving as Commissioner of Planning, Commissioner of Fire and Rescue, and Commissioner of Public VJorks and Public Property.” Reports 5f the several commissioners were presented and Mayor Cleveland announced •that discussions of the subject of street lights, which appears to be of citizen concern, would be held at the March 3 meeting of the Board* He then adjourned the tweeting for the presentation of the tax revaluation discussion, which was the principle thrust of the meeting* The discussion was presented by Mary Sue Noe, chairman of the Board of County Commissioners; Ronald Smith, Tax Supervisor for Carteret County, and Jim Towery, Revaluation Project Supervisor representing the W. P. Ferris Company* In his opening remarks Mr. Towery gave a history of the tax revaluation project in the county, and stated that the problem of arriving at fair market values was made more complex because of the wide and diverse population centers in the county* Mr. Towery also explained that although the valuation of property would increase, it was likely the rate would decrease to the end that on the average homeowners would pay little more than in previous years. Questions from the audience included how appraisals were made, water front property values, the effect of improvements, depreciation, services provided by the county and grounds for appeal.
