Page -5- Two students from Duke University Marine Laboratory, Dean Ritz and Jess larson, are conducting a detailed research of the quality of the water in the PKS canal. The work is 1)6ing performed under the guidance of Dr, Joseph Ramos, CANAL WATER The objectives of the study are to determine thet (l) water circulation GETS STUDY patterns; (2) turnover time, or rate that water is replaced by new water; ——— (3) acidity; (4) light penetration, which promotes growth; (5) water tem perature; (6) salinity; (7) nutrient content, i.e. phosphorus, nitrogen, oxygen; (8) plankton biomass, which is a measure of micro plant productivity; (9) coliform content; and (10) identification of types of marine life. The tests will be taken at 22 points within the canal and at two points in each mouth of the canal. The researchers will also use data gathered by Vesie Tulagin and Jim Johnson, They have contacted the various North Carolina State agencies for historic data already available. After the study, which should be completed in December, we expect they will be able to tell us what is happening to the quality of our canal, and what we can do to improve it. Their progress will be reported in Shore Line later. Wishing everyone good health and good bowling, ------- oOo ------- John and Cecile Sullivan have been in their new house at 119 Walnut Circle since June, They moved here from Westbury, N, Y, bringing along their mini poodle, Tamiiy, OUR NEW John has retired as Labor Relations Manager for North American Philips Corp, NEIGHBORS finds retirement a great relief from commuting on the Long Island Railroad ■ extensive traveling all over the country his work required but it may be a little too much of a good thing. He plans to do some arbitration on a contractual basis. The Sullivans have four children and five grandchildren. Their three daughters live and work in the Washington, D, C, area. Their son lives in Halifax, Va, John and Cecile have lived in both Raleigh and Wilmington so they were familiar with North Carolina, They had heard about this area as a vacation spot and discovered Pine Knoll Shores while on vacation. They bought a lot here but did not decide to build until they had compared it with a lot of other places. They are not disappointed. Once are settled they plan to fish a lot, play golf and just plain relax. Sara and Joe Burton moved to 125 Cedar Road on June 1, They moved here from Bowie, Maryland where they had lived for many years. They had been coming here for vacations
